Syringe Drawing Aid - "Insulin Draw Ez"
The majority of people with diabetes who take insulin use an insulin syringe. Insulin is a potent hormone; only a small amount of liquid must be injected. Since the syringe is small, grasping the syringe, grasping the vial of insulin, and then drawing up the insulin requires fine motor manipulation. While many products on the market target the vial and the syringe, no current devices target the manipulation of the plunger to draw up the insulin. Additionally, even for people with diabetes without diabetic neuropathy, patients with difficulty grasping small objects or who have joint pain or stiffness may also benefit from an assistive device that helps manipulate the plunger part of an insulin syringe.
Supplies
- 4x4 inch piece of splinting material
- Scissors
- Small suction cups
- Super glue
- Small pan of hot water
Prep
- Heat water to a temperature appropriate for softening desired splinting material.
Creating the Material
- Once soft cut a small triangle into the splinting material, as shown below:
- Allow splinting material to harden on a flat surface.
- Superglue small suction cups on each corner and allow the glue to dry.
Implementing the Device
- While holding the barrel, slide the plunger into the triangle cut out and remove the cap.
- Place the needle into the insulin vile and draw your necessary dosage.
- Remove the vile, slide your plunger out of the Draw-Ez, and administer the insulin.
