The swing is a circus instrument accessible to all, for people with and without disabilities. The games are adapted to the user's needs and desires. Meanwhile, it tests motor skills, lateralisation of the hand and social contact. An open design (materials that can be found everywhere) is used. The construction is ergonomic so that users can function as optimally as possible. Moreover, the construction is modular, e.g. the amount of tubes can be adjusted.

A large construction is more fun to play with (more interactive) and clearer about what needs to be done.

Supplies

Tubes:

4 of 2 meters with diameter 50 mm

1 of 1 meter with diameter 40 mm + thick edge (divide into 4 parts of 2 cm)

1 of1 meter with diameter 32 mm (divide into 2 parts of 49 cm)

Weights:

4 of 2 kg (diameter 50 mm)

Bolts:

4 M6 with length 60 mm

Mat (impeller):

Tickness 7 mm (divide into 4 delen)

Anti-slip mat:

2 different colors of 45 cm long (divide each mat into 2 parts).

Wood:

Multiplex sheet 18 mm thick(1250 x 2440)

Glue:

Contact and PVC glue

Other materials:

Multi-tool, hot air gun, drill, CNC milling machine, scissors, bow saw, screws

Saw Tubes to Size

Keep the tubes of 2 meters the same lengts.

The 1-meter tube (diameter 40 mm), divide it into 4 equal parts of 22 cm each. This will then become the guidance tube.

The tube of 1 meter (diameter 32 mm), divide into 2 equal parts of 49 cm each. This will then become the axis.

(make more sense later)

Notching Long Tube

inkeping buis juist.png

Make a notch in the long tubes of 6 cm, starting at 33 cm height. Cut this opening using a multitool.

Heating Tubes

IMG_4471.jpg

PVC pipes can be easily deformed with heat. Heat the notch using a heat gun and insert the short tube.

Position of the Tubes

IMG_4465.jpg
model.png

Ensure that all tubes are perpendicular to each other. (via the fixture).

You make the model by making a cross in a wooden scrap board with nails, so that the tube can lie between them.

Safety Around Tube

Afbeelding1.jpg

Apply glue to both the mat and the tube. Allow this to dry for 15 minutes and then place the gauge around the tube. Leave some space along the top to place the 'mof' on top.

Holes for the Weights

IMG_4512 (3).jpg
IMG_4509 (1) (2).jpg

Measure on the tubes where the 3 holes should be to attach the weights (mark each time). Starting at a height of 20 mm and leaving an interval of 50 mm each time.

Add Weights

IMG_4558 (1).jpg

Attach the weights to the tube at the desired height with a bolt.

The location of the weight determines the speed. High, middle: balance equal, low.

Cutting the Impeller

Afbeelding2.jpg

Cut the mat into 4 equal parts. Cut each part in half again.

Making the Impeller

IMG_4562.jpg
IMG_4554.jpg

Secure the top and sides together with double-sided tape.

Wrap the 'mof' with the double-sided tape and stick it at the bottom.

Stick both sides together, with the 'mof' getting sandwiched between the mat pieces.

If the edges are not aligning nicely, they can be cut straight with a racer blade.

Making the Toolbox

lijm constructie.png

Create the CNC program (code) for the CNC machine.

If there's no CNC machine accessible, the same results can be created with a jigsaw and some hole saws.

In the attached file, there is a PDF with true size drawings on a standard plywood sheet which could be used for the CNC program or you could use the same drawing for handcrafting it.

Making the Toolbox

Remove all the parts from the plate. Sand where necessary. Remove CNC tabs with a router table or us the sander.

Making the Toolbox

Hang all parts of the toolbox together (sides).

Hang the 2 parts of the hinge together and attach them above the holes (make sure you mount them as high as possible)

An STL file is attached for better visualization of the assembly.

How to Put Everything Together

IMG_4564.jpg

Get al the materials from the toolbox.

Place the impeller and weights on the tube.

Open the hinge and take out the short tube.

Place 2 large tubes on the short tube and put them back in the right place.

How to Take Everything Together

Place the weights, bolts and the impellers in the box.

Insert the long tubes into the holes provided.
