D4E1 Swing Aid: Pillow
We are a team of industrial product design students at Howest University in Kortrijk, Belgium. We designed 2 products to help protect the hands and the bottom of a child that loves to swing. This is D4E1 (Design For EveryOne) project. You can find more information on D4E1 on this site: http://designforeveryone.howest.be/.
In this instructable, you can learn how to make a pillow to put on a swing. The pillow can protect the bottom of the child while swinging.
Supplies
- Elastic fabric
- Velcro
- Tread
- Sewing machine
- Straps
- Klick system
- Part to adjust the length of the straps
- Antislip strip Foam (+/- 5cm thick)
- Measure the swing seating. Cut the foam so it fits the swing surface.
- Measure the circumference of the foam in both directions.
- Take the length (green) measurements. Ad 2X 3.5 cm (depending on tissue) for finishing. Ad 10 cm for closing the tissue.
- Take the “widh” (red) measurements /2. Ad 2x 2cm for finishing
- Cut the fabric.
Make the Edges on the a Side.
Bend the border of the A-side. Sew alongside the border.
Position the Tissue Inside Out
2X 28cm = legth mesurments + 10cm closing tissue.
Sew the Velcro on the inner side of the edge of the fabric (side of 23 cm).
Sew the other part of the Velcro on the outer side of the fabric (side 15 cm).
Sew alongside the red line to close both sides (2 cm from border).
Make the Corners
- Bend the “rib” on to the seam.
- Put perpendicular on the seam the tikness of the foam to match the sides.
- Sew on that line and cut off the extras.

Make the Straps
- Put the part to adjust the robes in the straps.
- cut the straps on the right length. A bit longer than the circumference of the swing. You can test this first: put the straps around the swing and mark how long you need it to be.
- Sew the click system on to the straps
Sew the straps to the fabric on the bottom side.
Cut 2 strips of antislip and sew them to the bottom of the pillow.
You can now use the pillow on the swing
