Sweet & Savory Scones

Scones are a wonderfully simple and delicious bread from Scotland. They are easy to make and can be made with a variety of different ingredients.

For a list of ideas for scone ingredients and ways to eat scones, see the last step in this guide.

I have very little baking experience and very few tools to work with... So if I can make these scones, so can you!

Ingredients

ingredients.jpg
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white sugar (only if you want sweet scones)
5 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter
1 egg, beaten
1 cup milk

You also need a large bowl and a cookie sheet.

Peparation and Dry Ingredients

Preheat the oven to 400 F. If you have a non-stick cookie sheet, there is no need to grease or spray it. If not, very lightly grease your cookie sheet or spray with cooking spray.

In a bowl, mix all of your dry ingredients together. You can use your hands, a fork, a spoon, a whisk - anything really.

Butter

Cut your refrigerated butter (cold butter works better than warm butter for scones) into small sections. Dump the butter into your dry ingredients and mix until crumbly. I do this with a knife and my hands.

Wet Ingredients

Mix one egg and one cup of milk. Add about HALF of this liquid mixture to your dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. I use my fork and hands.

Slowly add more liquid ingredients to dry ingredients until the dough is moist and sticking slightly to your hands. If you are like me, you'll mess up and make the dough too wet. If you do this, add extra flour and keep mixing until the dough isn't sticking to your hands as much.

Form Your Scones and Bake

This recipe makes 8 normal-sized scones. The best way to shape them is to divide the dough in half into two large balls, then slice the balls into quarters. Otherwise you can take handfuls of dough and shape them however you would like.

A fun thing to do with your scones is to add extra ingredients to each handful of dough. Simply take a handful of dough and a handful of extra ingredients (see final step for ideas), mix together in your hands, form, and place on the pan. You could also try rolling your dough in coarse sugar or brown sugar.

For my scones I added cranberries to two scones, walnuts and cinnamon to two scones, chocolate chips to 3 scones, and lemon juice to one scone.

Bake in the oven at 400 F for 15 minutes or until light-golden-brown.
