Sustainable House in the Amazon Rain Forest.
Have you ever dreamed about living in the middle of the woods or in the Amazon Rainforest? Well, you might not want to hurt the wildlife there right? So you could build a sustainable house.
- List of Materials for this project
- Foam Board
- Boxcutter or utility knife
- Glue (Tacky Glue Recommended)
- Some Solo Cups
- Straws
- A safe work environment
- An Arduino board with a USB cable
- Arduino Uno Software
Choosing a Location
The first thing you will need to do is find a location where this house should be. I chose the Amazon Rain Forest.
(-3.468143, -62.211889, These are the coordinates) but you can choose anywhere you want.
Make a Rainwater Collection System
Your next step in completing this project is to make a rainwater collection bucket
Sketching the Model
The first thing you will want to sketch out the plans for your house. Make 4-6 sketches one for each side of the house. The next thing you want to do is draw a floor plan. I do not show the inside of my model but you have to worry about spacing and where you have to put things. So make sure you have a floor plan
Cut Foam Board
The next step is to cut the foam board. I used Elmer's foam board with two flat spaces. Then cut it in half. After that cut the two halves in half.
Trim Foam Board to the Correct Size
Now that you have the floor plan done then you are going to want to trim the foam board to the correct size. The area of my model is 8.5 by 11" or the area of printer paper. The height of my walls is 6 inches.
Water and Wastewater
So thing next thing you are going to need is a way to get clean water. If you chose the Amazon Rainforest then rainwater is a good option. For this model, I used straws as gutters and plastic cups for tanks. These gutters are going to go on both sides of the house. Then you are going to connect the plastic cups to the gutters. For wastewater, I am piping my greywater to my garden for fertilizer. and I will have a composting toilet. Keep in mind if you are going to have a composting toilet then it must be at least 60.96 meters (or 200 ft) away from any body of water. so I would put it near the garden on the left side. This also makes it easier to pipe the greywater into your garden.
Solar Pannels
Solar panels are a renewable source of energy. They do not release carbon into the atmosphere. So they are the best way to go. So for the model I got a Santa Claus yard light with a solar pannel on it. Then I cut it open so the led would dangle inside the house.
Stilits
If you are building your house in the Amazon Rainforest then there is something you need to know. The river floods. So it is best if you put your house on stilts. I used plastic rods from the dollar store. Then Spray painted them brown. They were about 4 inches tall. They are wide not thin. Take the plastic cover off before painting.
Tape or Glue the House Together
The next step is to assemble everything. I used duct tape on the inside of the house, but you can use whatever you want to hold it together. The dimensions of the model are the dimensions of a piece of printer paper placed horizontally. The walls are 6 inches tall. Now the roof extends 3/4 the lengths of the small farm and 1/2 the length of the front porch. Then you will cut two holes in the roof on the farm side so the plants get light.
Garden
Next, you are going to make the garden. Cut four pieces of foam to size (4 by 6" ) these must be at least one ruler tall. Then make two of those by laying all of them flat on the table and tape them to each other. after that get some potting soil.
Chicken Coop
The next step is to make a chicken coop. The dimensions are 3.75 in by 4 in. It is 4 inches tall and on one of the 4 insides make a cut a half-inch deep. the roof is just one flat piece of foam board slightly bigger the coop itself.
Painting
After you have the main house assembled then you are ready to paint it. If you are going to be using spray paint like I did do it in a properly ventilated environment or outside. If you cannot do those things then put on some sort of dust mask. Not the surgical or cloth masks. You want an N-95 or respirator mask. If you are in a garage then have it open. I used the Color brown to simulate wood. I would do multiple coats as well.
Assemble and Finish
Now that you have painted everything it is time to put everything together. Put the garden and chicken coop where you planned. Put the gutters and tanks up. Make sure the lights work well. Then you are done!
