Sushi Cupcakes

After I decided to make this Instructable I realized there are already some similar to this but hopefully this one is a bit different. I didn't mean to try and step on any toes or copy anyone :)

It's one of my best friend's birthday and her favourite thing ever is sushi, she eats it about 6 days out of the week so of course I wanted to make her a sushi cake for her birthday! Well, I should say cup cakes. I made two different styles, one is a classic roll and the other, to be completely honest, I have no idea what it's called.

For this project I used the following:

gummy bears
fuzzy peaches
fuzzy apple slices
jujubes
chocolate cake
cream cheese icing
3 tomato paste cans
coconut
fondant (black, pink, orange and purpleish)
parchment paper

Baking the Cake

I used 3 tomato paste cans and cut off both ends for my sushi roll "cake pans" each can makes 2 rolls. I lined the inside with parchment and places them on a baking sheet. I filled them about 3/4 full, I used the rest of my cake batter in a small square pan. A little bit of batter leaked out from underneath my cans but nothing to significant. I don't know if there would be anyway to keep this from happening but it wasn't a big deal so I wouldn't worry about it.

Cutting Cake

So you'll end up with some funny shaped cakes. I cut the rounded ends off then cut my cakes in half. These will each be a sushi roll. I cut up my larger cakes into rectangles with some half circles to fit on top of the nameless sushi.

I cut my candy into tiny pieces to be the filling of my sushi, I just kept with colours that looked at least a bit natural. I covered the top of the sushi roll with icing and dipped in the coconut to look like rice, I then coated the sides with icing and applied my fondant seaweed. Once I had everything covered I stuck some candy on the top in the center.

To make my second style of sushi I covered the rectangle in icing and dipped it in coconut. I put icing on the half circle and covered it in the coloured fondant. I put white stripes of fondant over the coloured before i rolled it to give it the appearance of real fish.

Ginger and Wasabi

As a final touch I but some green food colouring in a bit of spare icing and piped some wasabi onto the plate. I flattened a few fuzzy peaches with a rolling pin and trimmed them to be the ginger and added that as well.
