Super Easy Rope'n'Thread Statement Necklace

15.jpg

I love statement pieces! It is amazing how one single piece can bring a whole outfit together. It's like magic...

Anyway, another thing I love is recycling, so when I have some leftovers from any project I try to find a way to make use of them.

Last week I replaced my old bicycle rack straps and had some bungee rope left. Seeing those scraps I automatically knew I wanted to make a necklace out of them. I loved the bright blue color of it and I was sure that pairing it with a basic white sewing thread will give it a summer-nautical look I was going for.

This is a very easy and fast project to make. So easy, anyone can do it, and results are always BOLD.

So gather your supplies and lets get to it, in 10 minutes you will thank me... while wearing your amazing new statement necklace!

Prepare Your Supplies

For one simple necklace like the one on the picture above you will need:

  • At least 1m (40in) of thick rope, cotton or bungee, whatever you have around
  • Regular sewing thread, any color you like
  • Super glue
  • Adhesive tape
  • Scissors
  • Sewing pins

Clean-cut the Ends of the Rope

To start, make sure the ends of the rope are cut in a clean way.

Either if you are using a bungee cord like I am, or a threaded cotton rope, it is most probably that if you simply cut the ends it will fray.

To avoid unraveling take a piece of adhesive tape and wrap it tightly around the rope.

Once you've done that you can take your scissors and cut the end in a clean way.

Join the Ends to Create a Loop

Apply super glue generously to both ends of your rope and join them together.

This step is very important since besides closing your rope into a loop (that will become your necklace) adding glue to the ends will prevent the rope from ravelling.

Wait a bit for the glue to dry and tightly wrap a piece of adhesive tape to secure the union.

Cover the Joined Ends With Thread

Cover the piece of adhesive tape by rolling up the sewing thread around it in a tightly manner.

You can start by doing a simple knot around the rope and continuing passing the thread inside the necklace loop over and over again until you cover the adhesive tape. Then finish with another simple knot when you have reached the end.

Here, I used a sewing pin to help me get started. It also helps me mark the section I want to cover with thread.

Do not worry about being super ordered in the looping of the thread, going over and over again the same section adds texture to the details.

Shape Your Necklace

By now you should have a very long loop of rope, but what we really want is to have a double looped statement necklace.

To create the shape take your long loop of rope and twist it in an "8" figure, now you should have a double loop necklace like the picture above.

Use your sewing pins to secure the crossing section of the "8" figure and to mark and join the two sections that will be wrapped in thread together. You can mark and unmark your necklace as many times as you like until you are satisfied with the shape.

Here I decided to have one loop smaller than the other one and to join it in two sections, but you can experiment and design your necklace as you wish.

Once you are happy with it, add super glue to the two sections that will be wrapped with the sewing thread, but before you do glue it forever...

Make sure you can are able to easily pass your head through the smaller loop!

Wrap the Joined Sections With Thread

Once the super glue is dry you can start wrapping the sewing thread around the joined sections tightly.

Start with a simple knot around the beginning of the section and go around and around it with the thread.

Use as many thread as you need and do not worry about going over and over again the same spot with the thread, again, it adds texture and makes it unique.

Once you finish the section, secure with a knot around the rope and repeat on the other side.

Test It Out!

By now you should have something that resembles the necklace in the picture.

Check the knots on the threads to make sure they are tight and secure. If you feel like it, you can add a bit of super glue to them to make them last forever

Try it on and enjoy!
