This bed will be loved by your cat, and, it is very easy to make! My cats were already laying on it before it was done, that shows that this is a winner! Have fun with the toys that are made from the leftover scarps and use up some of your old socks all at the same time! Have Fun!

Materials and Equipment

You will need a few things to make this:

Materials
• 3 5” x 5’ fleece pieces in different colors
• Thread
• 1 yd. of string
• Dowel rod
• Old socks (to fill the bed)

Equipment
• Sewing machine
• Scissors
• Rotary cutter, cutting mat, and ruler
• Pins
• Needle

Preparing the Fleece

DSCN6280.JPG
Cut the selvages and crooked edges off of the three fleece strips with the rotary cutter (or scissors, if you don’t have one). Cut each strip of fleece in half so that the pieces are shorter (not narrower), fold each in half. With the rotary cutter, cut each piece of fleece into two pieces the long direction, (so that they are narrower) not necessarily the same size. Lay them out in the order that you would like them to be, leaving out one strip of each color (you will use them for the toys).

Putting the Fleece Together

Line up the edges of the fleece strips and pin the first two pieces together so that the edges are lined up. Sew along the pinned edge with the sewing machine with the wrong sides together using ¼ inch seam allowance. Do this for all 9 pieces. (My cats can’t wait for their new bed!!)

Closing the Body

Cut off all of the uneven edges with the rotary cutter*. Fold the fleece in half with the wrong sides together and pin. Sew along the outside of the fleece using ¼ seam allowance. Leave a 4” opening in the seam.

Cut the fabric on the corners down to the seam (be very careful not to cut the seam) to reduce the bulk. Turn the fleece inside out. Stuff the bed with the old socks. If you want, cut the socks into smaller pieces. Spread the socks out so that the bed is not lumpy. Close the opening in the bed with a slip stich. Trim all loose threads.

Making the First Toy

With the scraps that you cut after the strips had been sewn together*, the string, and the dowel rod, you can make a simple toy on a stick type cat toy. Tie the string around the two scrap pieces and then tightly tie it around the dowel rod. That’s all it takes!

Making the Second Toy

With the rotary cutter, cut small strips out of the three leftover strips from earlier. Line them all up and tie a knot at the top. This makes a good toy for the cats when you are busy!

Enjoy!
