How to make metal sunbed from metal

I was tired of repairing or buying new sunbeds every few years. They can be easily bought, they are cheap but they also have poor quality. As You can see, such wooden sunbeds are really impermanent in my moderate climate where there are a lot of rains during summer, autumn and spring.

So I've decided to make sunbed which is as durable as possible and that means making it from metal. But still, it is really easy project which You will find in the moment.

Supplies

You will need:

  • metal profiles 2x3cm in cross cut
  • 4 screws
  • rust oleum paint

Cut Metal Profiles to Desired Length

First step is simple. Just measure and mark the desired lenght of metal profiles. Then cut the profiles. You need to have:

  • two pieces 110 cm length and two pieces 50 cm length pieces for outer frame
  • two 45 cm and two 80 cm for inner frame
  • two 57 cm and one 42 cm for the C-shape frame
  • two 10 cm pieces for support

Cutting is easy if You have the metal cutter, but if no, still You can use angle grinder with metal cutting disc.

Reminder: cutting metal can be dangerous, so use the protection on Your eyes.

As You can see on picture, the metal I used is very rusty but this is no problem. Rust can be (and it should be) removed/sanded. This can be done using sandpaper or angle grinder with sandpaper disc.

Welding Frame

Sunbed frame is just three simple parts: two rectangles and one C-shape 'almost rectangle. You can see them on attached photos. All welding are very simple ones, because it's just 90 degrees welding.

I've welded using two magnetic triangles. They are very helpful if You want to weld rectangular elements.

Mounting the Frame

Two rectangular frame parts have to be mounted together using pivoting screw. You need to drill the holes at 25 cm from the bottom on the outer and 30 cm in the inner rectangle as on the picture. Then put the screw in the hole and mount the two rectangles together.

the last part of the frame, the C-shaped part which holds the sunbed in right position, should also be mounted on screw. Measure the drilling point like I've pointed on the pictures. The hole should be 40 cm from the top of outer frame.

Mechanism for the Fabric

Typical wooden sunbed have screws on the frame. You can remove those screws, put the fabric and mount the screws once again. Something similar can not be made in metal sunbed, so I made different mechanism. I've cut the frame at the top and at the bottom and this allows to put the fabric. Then I've added wider profile which is mounted with additional screws and connects cutted frame. It works like that:

  • You unscrew the wider profile
  • You put the fabric
  • You can screw once again the frame with wider profile

Painting

Last step was to paint the frame and put the fabric.

It's good to use rustoleum paint or in fact any paint for metal.

And that's all. Now You can enjoy Your sunbed for years! It won't fell off like wooden one!
