CAUTION: I stopped using this holder in favor of Version 2.0. Please refer to that one here.

  • I found some filaments are not wound very well and the added tension from poor winding and the friction from this design of holder was causing problems with my printer's extruder.
  • Overture Brand are wound well
  • PRUSA filament (at least the clear 1.75mm PLA) are not wound well

If you still want to make this, please continue, but be cautious of your extruder. (Clicking noises are a bad sign.):

NOTE: This is sized for a 65mm wide bobbin.

Cut two pieces of Schedule 40, 1-1/2" PVC pipe to 6-5/8". (1-5/16" of this length is inserted into each side of the elbow fitting.)
Cut two pieces of Schedule 40, 1-1/2" PVC pipe to 2-5/8". (1-5/16" of this length is inserted into each side of the elbow fitting.)

See the second image above for the spacing. 4" on the long side, and 1" on the short side. If you cut each piece of pipe the proper size and fully insert into the fittings you will end up with these dimensions.

You can glue the joints or just leave them dry fit. I chose to just leave them dry fit.
