Sugru Gear Tie

This is a simple Instructable on how to make your own rubber gear tie. This can be used to fasten a water bottle to a backpack, hook your keys to a messenger bag, connect two things together, and more.

Materials

For this project, you will need the following:

  • Plastic wrap (to keep your working surface clean, and prevent the tie from adhering to it)
  • 4 packets of Sugru (or more if a larger tie is desired)
  • An 8-inch length of 12-gauge aluminumcraft wire

Mix the Sugru

Mix all packets of Sugru together.

Shape the Sugru

Using your hands to roll out the Sugru on the plastic wrap until it is about the length of the wire.

Wrap the Sugru

Wrap the Sugru around the wire, so that it just barely extends past the ends. Any longer and the wire will poke through the Sugru when you bend it later. Wrap it so that no wire is showing, and the wire is wrapped evenly all around by the Sugru. To finish, smooth the Sugru with your fingers so that no seams remain.

Let dry for 24 hours.

You can now use your new gear tie to attach stuff to backpacks, messenger bags, and more. It is good and strong, so you can even use it to hold a water bottle!
