This project integrates a hand-spun, handwoven yarn garment with sugru beads to add the finishing touches.

Selecting a Handwoven Piece

The mobius that I wove was knotted at the edges but I wanted to join both edges with some flair. So I decided to create large beads using sugru.

Materials for the Sugru Beads

In order to create the 13 Sugru beads I used 6 packs of Sugru. I used 2 packs of red, 2 packs of yellow, and 2 packs of black. I also needed a needle to create a hole for the correct diameter needed to draw 8 strands of hand-spun yarn through to hold the edges together.

At first I started with one color but quickly started mixing the colors to create more interesting beads. I formed the sugru into 13 equal sized balls with my hands. The balls were then punctured with the needle and formed again with the hole. By moving the needle back and forth, the edges of the beads were formed into the shape that I wanted. I had 30 minutes to do this whole process as the sugru is malleable for up to 30 minutes.

The finished beads were all unique and needed to air dry for 24 hours.

Finishing the Handwoven With the Beads

After the beads sat for 24 hours of air drying, I added them to the garment and finished the handwoven in water to set the yarn. The beads create a nice weight to the handwoven as well as a beautiful and unique finishing touch.
