Suction-Hook-Mounted Pot Lid Holder

For the longest time, managing counter space has been my biggest issue when cooking. Of the numerous sources, pot lids seem to be the biggest element of this problem of space. Pot lids are large in surface area, take up much space, and often lack a good designated space for storage when working. Here I’ve made a wall-mounted pot lid holder with no need for drilling, or any heavy tools.

Supplies

Tools and materials needed:

  • Two wood blocks (30 cm x 30 cm x >0.5cm)
  • Laser cutter
  • All purpose, non-toxic, non-water soluble white glue
  • Two suction cup hooks
  • Food grade mineral oil, such as cutting board oil for coating the wood

Download IPT Files

Download the following ipt files. The “lid_holder_frame.ipt” file contains the frame of the holder, and the “lid_holder_rack.ipt” contains the “rack”.

Create a Drawing File

Create a drawing file, and delete the ANSI and default border to get a blank work plane.

Import IPT Files

Add the “lid_holder_frame.ipt” file by clicking “Base”, and scale using the dropdown box under “Scale”. The standard size of the holder fits a pot lit of diameter 25cm; scale your file accordingly.

Export As PDF

Export the file as a PDF.

Repeat steps 2 to 4 for the “lid_holder_rack.ipt” file.

Set Up Laser Cutter

Activate your laser cutter, and import the PDF file.

Adjust your laser cutter with settings similar to the above images.

Cut out one frame piece, and two "rack" pieces.

Assemble the Pieces

Collect the pieces, and assemble by slotting the “rack” pieces through the rectangular cuts in the frame. The “racks” should be at a 40° - 30° angle to the face of the frame. Feel free to slightly file the insides of the rectangle cut if the rack does not fit through perfectly.

Apply a generous amount of white glue to set the pieces in place. Let the device set for at least 24 hours.

Wood Finishing

Prepare the mineral oil and coat the wood in its entirety. Make sure you apply an ample amount of coating; let the coating soak into the wood. However, also be careful not to use too much, as it can leave a wet layer on the wood after drying.

For demonstration purposes, I used Danish Oil to help better visualise the distribution of the coating. BE SURE TO ONLY USE FOOD GRADE COATINGS.

Mount the Pot Lid Holder

Take two suction cup hooks, and slip the hooks into the holes in the frame. Lock the suction cup hooks in place on the wall.

Your new, fully-adjustable and removable pot lid holder is now ready for use!
