Sturdy Standing Desk Mod Within $80,-
I always wanted a standing desk at home, so I finally made one. It's very sturdy, because I use the wall behind my desk for stability. The desk if completely manual, so lifting it up and lowering requires some strength.
When everything is folded in, the desk mod is very compact and leaves space on your desk for other things.
Depending on where you get your hardware, the total price should be below $80. Some parts are 3D printed.
Good luck!
Supplies
- 2 Linear guides: MGN9 rails. I used the C-version, but H is better. (more stable). Length is
- 2 Full extending drawer siders
- 4 hinges
- Some 3D printed parts
- 8x M3x6 countersunk
- 2x M5x20 countersunk
- 2x M5 nut
- Wood and screws
Cut All Wood in the Desired Lengths Except for the Drawer
Cut the desk, side walls and feet.
All planks have the same depth. I'd recommend setting the depth as half of your current desk. (for example, my desk is 600mm deep, so my mod is 300mm deep.)
All sizes in PDF are personal preferences and in millimeters.

Screw the Desk, Side Walls and Legs Together.
I managed to fix the drawer guides on top of the hinges. Make sure that the side walls and legs are aligned when extended.
Measure the Distance Between the Drawer Guides and Cut the Drawer Accordingly
You'll want the drawer to be as low as possible for ergonomic reasons. It should rest right above the folded legs. (see image)
It's important to be precise, because (at least my) drawer guides have small tolerances.
Print and Mount Brackets
Mount the MGN9C sliders to the bracket with 4 m3x6 countersunk screws. Then screw it to the main assembly.
If you have an MGN9H slider, you'll have to adjust the 3D models.
Mount the Rails to the Wall
Now here's the tricky part. With the rails in the sliders, you have to carefully mark the holes in the wall before drilling. This will determine how well the desk mod will slide.
Tip: tie the ends of the rails off with tape to prevent them from sliding completely out.
Print and Install Drawer Stoppers
The stoppers require an M5x20 countersunk crew and nut.
Add a Wire and You're Done!
It can be difficult to lower the desk, because you have to fold the legs inward while holding the desk up. With a wire attached to the bottoms of the feet, you can fold both legs with one hand.
If desired, you can cut some holes for electrical wiring.
