Studio Ghibli - Totoro Decoration Box

IMG_4018.JPG

I made a Totoro-Studi Ghibli wooden decoration box.

Supplies

Plywood, Hot glue, Computer, lasercutter

Making the Box

IMG_4035.JPG

Go to MakerCase and make a box with inside dimensions: 13cm (length), 3cm (width), 17cm (height).

Laser Cut the Box

After you have the box ready in maker case, download that file as svg and go to glowforge. When you cut it out, make sure that you have the parts inside the boundaries, so it cuts out nicely. For this part you do not need to cut the front part of the box. You will cut out a Totoro shape next step that you will glue it on the front of the box.

Finding Totoro Image and Using Tinkercad to Edit It

Find an image of totoro online and go to Tinkercad. You use it to make the front part of the box. You design a rectangle (dimension: 13cm (length), 17cm (height)) and create a hole. Then group it and will look something like this. Download the file on tinkercad as svg and use glowforge to cut it out.

Cut Out the Totoro Shape (front Cover)

Cut out the totoro shape and this will be the cover of the box. (front) Keep the piece that comes out of it, you will use it later.

Make and Cut Out the 4 Objects That You Will Put Inside the Box.

Search images on google and convert the file to svg so you can cut it on the laser cutter. For my objects, I used Mei Kusakabe, Satsuki Kusakabe, and an image of nekobus. I also included a small totoro on the top left of the box.

Make a Sign

IMG_4024.JPG

Make a sign that says "Studio Ghibli" and I also wrote it in Japanese to make it more interesting. I engraved a totoro shape next to the written words and looks something like this. I cut out a 4cm*10cm rectangle to use as the sign. To do this you go to tinkercad to design it. Use the text tools in tinkercad to help write out the words. Then, you group everything together (text, rectangle, totoro shape) to make it one object.

Assembling It

Now, you just have to put all pieces together to make one decoration box. First, you hot glue the leftover totoro piece that you got from cutting the wood in step 3 onto the blank plywood. Then, hot glue the 4 objects (mei, satsuki, nekobus, little totoro) on top of that. You can put it wherever you want.

Hot Glue All Side Parts

Hot glue all of the side parts, including the front totoro shape.

Final Step

The final step, which is just to hot glue the sign you created in step 5 on top of the front wood. After that, finished.
