String Pull Painting

i Made a string pull painting, this is one of my favorite styles of abstract painting. I have been making this type of painting for around 5 years, I like it because its more controlled than pour painting and you have a better idea of how your finished project will look.

Supplies

i used string line in hot pink, 1 can of black epoxy paint, 1 can of white epoxy paint, 1 can of red latex paint, 1 small empty water bottle, an old painted canvas to paint over, couple of mats to catch excess paint, a scissors or knife

The Empty Water Bottle

I first cut the very bottom off the water bottle. Then i create a hole in the lid big enough to pull the string-line through. {I like to use an empty bottle because it catches excess paint from the string inside the bottle so if i want or need to add more color i can reuse the string.}

Canvas Set Up

I place my catch mats on the floor first and I then lay the canvas I have selected to recycle on them. Then I will decide how long of a string I use by arranging it and then cutting the string with an extra 4-6 inches off of the bottom of the canvas. you will need that extra length for pulling through the bottle in step 1.

Painting the Backround

I chose the black enamel for my background color. Its easiest to pour it on vs using a paint brush because this first layer has to be thicker than a brush can apply it. I then use a spatula to smear it evenly around the canvas , don't forget to get the outside edges of your canvas. It helps to make the project look finished .

I will put my pre-cut string directly into the paint can leaving the extra 4-6 inch excess hanging over the edge of the can. I used 4 pre-cut strings, 2 in the white epoxy paint and 2 in the latex paint.One at a time slowly removing the string straight up from the can to minimize mess and unwanted drips on the canvas. Arrange the paint saturated strings from the top of your canvas and side to side. Overlapping the string is fine, you will want to place all the string on the canvas together with the excess hanging off the bottom,

Preparing to Pull the String

Gather together the string ends into the bottom of the water bottle and out through the hole you cut in the lid

Pull

Just pull the ends of string off of your canvas by dragging it from the bottom of your canvas through the lid in the bottle, all the strings at the same time.

Optional

i decided to add a touch of glitter by using a small handful of glitter and just gently blowing it onto the painting. this step is completely up to you, its not necessary

now just leave the painting flat until completely dry usually 24 hours at a minimum.
