Square Heel Slippers

Using simple crochet, I made a pair of slippers for my cold feet. The idea for how this slipper is shaped came to me while stuck in bed recovering from an injury.
Supplies

- Crochet Hook
- Yarn
- Stitch Markers (optional)
You can use any Crochet hook, and yarn of your choice. Most yarn comes with recommended hook sizes. Choose a yarn that feels good on your skin.
I'm using a 6mm hook, with an all-cotton yarn. It is not cold very often here, in South Florida, so cotton is personally preferred. If you are in a colder environment, consider something like a wool blend.
Make a Square: ☐

We will be using the Single Crochet and Double Crochet stitches for the majority of the project. Optionally at the end of the project the Triple Crochet stitch can be used for some detail.
We start this project with a magic circle, or any method you prefer to create a ring of eight (8) single crochet stitches. Once you have a circle, we want to make it a square. Out of the 8 stitches in a circle, mark four (4) corners. I like to stitch "in-the-round", continuously spiraling around, not closing each round.
To form a square, we need to build the corners. In each corner stitch, put a single, a double, and another single crochet stitch, all in the same corner stitch. Then continue around to the next corner.
Round the Square Into "D": ☐ ↣ D

Continue around the square for two more rounds, or until it is wide enough for the back of your heel. Once you have the desired width for the square, then only make two corners per round. Continue making a "D" each round until the length between the corners is long enough to wrap around your ankle. This will be the top cuff.
Close the "D" to Make "O": D ↣ O

Once you have a cuff long enough, put your foot in it. Place the heel where it is comfortable. If it is wide enough to wrap around your foot, it is time to close the "D" to make an "O". If you are making the second slipper, it is worth counting rows to get them to match.
Reduce Stitch

Once you have joined the sides to form the foot, mark the place they join with a stitch marker. as you continue around to cover the foot, you will want to Reduce a Stitch where you have that marker. Remember to move the marker down with each row. I reduced almost every row. Periodically put the slipper on to check the fit.
Close Toe

Once you have made the slipper long enough to cover your toes, you will want to close the end. First pull the toe inside-out. Then using a slip stitch, close the toe from the inside. Stitch through the back of the front row, and the front of the back row to combine the rows with each stitch. Once finished, trim the yarn, and stitch the ends into the fabric with a large needle. Do not leave the loose end on the inside.
(Optional) Add Buttons and Cuff

If you want a more frilly or heavy cuff, you can add to it now. I used double and triple crochet stitches to make the opening in the cuff overlap. I made button holes and added buttons.
