Spruce Tea

How to Make Spruce Tea Without Leaving Your Yard!

If you want to make some tea, but you have run out of all your tea bags, all you have to do is step out into the great outdoors (or even your backyard) and you can make some spruce tea. Not only is this tea great tasting, it also helps fight the symptoms of a cold. According to the research I conducted, it contains vitamin C and has been used as a decongestant.

I hope you will enjoy this article and don't forget to watch the video to see my brewing tea in

Note: If you are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant you should not drink spruce tea as it contains an ingredient that can act as an abortifacient. As with all medicinal plants, use at your own risk and make sure you consult your health care provider if you have any concerns. Be mindful that anything with medicinal ingredients (including from natural sources) can be harmful, especially if taken in excess. Do your own research if you are concerned and don't drink/eat anything if you have concerns.

Supplies

The supplies needed for this is minimal, basically you just need the normal things for making tea.

- Stove top (or fire if you are out in the wilderness)

- Kettle

- Cup or mug

- Spruce tree (substitutes include, pine and fir trees)

- Scissors or knife

Collecting the Spruce Needles

If you are lucky like me, you have a spruce tree in your yard where you can harvest the needles. If not, you can go for a walk and find one.

Take out your scissors or knife and cut off a few tips of a tree branch.

If you live in an area without spruce trees, I am sorry. I have heard that different coniferous (evergreen) trees can be used, so feel free to do your own research to see if the trees in your area are suitable for making tea.

Boil Water and Rinse Needles

I filled my kettle with water and then put it on the stove top to boil. While I waited, I took this opportunity to rinse off the spruce needles.

Steep the Needles

I placed the spruce needles in a cup. Personally, I leave the needles attached to the branch as it makes it easier to remove them later, but you can remove them if you wish.

I then added the boiling water and let it steep for 15 to 20 minutes.

Scoop Out the Needles

Using a fork I scooped out the needles and placed them to the side.

Enjoy!

Now it's time to sit back and enjoy your tea. It's a simple way to enjoy a hot beverage, especially if you have run out of other options.
