Sponge-Me-Away
The Sponge-Me-Away allows the user to efficiently and effectively wash themselves while in the shower or bath with only one hand. Traditionally, a person would have to use one hand to squeeze the soap bottle into their other hand, requiring the use of two hands. For many patients, this can be difficult or impossible. Our device enables occupational participation because it allows the person to be more independent with properly washing themselves. In some instances, it could allow someone the freedom to shower alone without the help of an outside caregiver. Some people could find assistance from another person while showering to be uncomfortable and negatively affect life satisfaction.
Supplies
The materials needed to replicate this AT device are a loofah mitt, snack-size Ziploc bag, toothpick, and liquid body wash.
Pierce Holes in Bag
Using a toothpick, pierce one side of the Ziploc bag 4-6 times to create small holes so that the soap will slowly leak out when pressure is applied
Fill Bag With Soap
Fill Ziploc bag with an appropriate amount of soap for one shower/bath and close securely
Put Bag in Mitt
While making sure the holes are facing away from your hand, place the Ziploc bag filled with soap in the loofah mitt
