SpinStash Working Demo

Like most engineers, I found my workbench to always be cluttered with spare parts, stationary, cables and more. Traditional storage solutions on the market felt too simple and boring. That's when I knew I had to build one myself - something that an engineer would use!

Introducing SpinStash, a novel merry-go-round inspired storage solution that rotates for easy access to your belongings. Prioritizing functionality, aesthetics and practicality, I designed this project to declutter my workspace - maybe you could too!

Unlike most organizers, SpinStash offers an enjoyable experience, without compromising of the "storage-like" qualities of an organizer. Below you'll find a detailed step-by-step guide on how you can build your own SpinStash!

Supplies

Materials Used -

  1. MDF laser cut components (2mm thick) (you can download the .dxf file from down below)
  2. Stainless steel rods (25cm length, 4mm diameter)
  3. Superglue (I have used Fevi kwik)
  4. Hot glue gun + glue sticks
  5. Drilling machine (I have used Bosch GSR 120-LI)
  6. Acrylic paints + paint brushes (optional)

Design a CAD Model

First, we begin by creating a CAD model in Autodesk Fusion to better visualize our design and to ensure all the components fit together seamlessly. Physical materials, appearances and engravings are then added for aesthetic reasons. Here, I chose to equip each compartment with a different feature including - no division, single division, double divisions, and an open window. Once we are satisfied with our design, we export the file as .dwg to laser cut our components on MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard). Below you can find the .f3d file, with the complete dimensions and assembly for SpinStash.

Next, we fasten the identical components of the triangular base using superglue to make it thicker and sturdier. We may then choose to paint the components for aesthetic appeal. Here, we have painted the 2 main circles black, smaller circles and dividers magenta, and the drawers to be the white. The main frame is kept untouched to highlight the laser etching of the logo on its side.

Assembling the Frame

We pass steel rods through the holes of the triangular frame and seal it up using hot glue, to create a strong and rigid framework. The two main circles are passed through the central rod according to our CAD design. Now our main frame which houses the compartments is ready!

Now we put together the compartment walls and their divisions in U-shapes. Then using the drilling machine, we drill holes of 4mm diameter near the top of the smaller circles to allow the steel rod to pass through. Lastly, we assemble each compartment ready to be fixed to the main frame.

SpinStash Working Demo

We carefully assemble each compartment in the main frame based on the CAD file. The endings of the steel rods are stuck using a hot glue gun. After some basic adjustments and repair, our SpinStash is finally ready!
