This project will be focused on the theme of Halloween and will be done with the intention of putting into practice the acquired knowledge of Arduino programming, in a fun and interactive way.

Supplies

Materials:

  • Featherboard
  • 60cm x 22,5cm wood board
  • Plastic spider
  • Fake spider webs
  • 1 Black spray 200ml
  • 1 white spray 200ml
  • Wooden sticks

Electronic components:

  • 1 Arduino UNO
  • 1 Arduino shield
  • Long and short wires for the Arduino pins
  • 2 Red LEDs
  • 1 HCSR04 Ultrasonic sensor
  • 2 Servo motor
  • 1 arduino cable
  • 1 Power adapter for arduino cable

Tools:

  • Thermo-glue
  • Cutter
  • wood saw
  • masking tape
  • tin wire
  • Cable soldering iron
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Ruler

Spider's House

To build the spider's house we will take the foam board and cut out 4 pieces, the sides, the top of the box and the back (the dimensions will depend on the scale you want to make the project). Then we glue the 4 pieces together, leaving the bottom part free.

Door

To make the door we will take the wooden sticks and a few pieces of cardboard. We will assemble the sticks in a rectangular shape, which will cover the frame of the entrance of the box. We will fold 2 rectangles of cardboard that will serve as supports for the rotation axis of the system. Finally, we will cut a piece of paper that will cover the whole structure of the toothpicks. In this way we manage to lighten the door for a better functioning of the servo.

We will cut a piece of cardboard in the shape of a tombstone, leaving some holes for the proximity sensor and we will take a recycled box that we will use to store all the electronics.

Base

We will take the wooden plank that will serve as a base. Glue the spider house, the tomb, the electronics box as shown in the picture.

We will take the 2 servos and the sensor. We will place one of the servos on top of the spider house and the other inside it. It can be glued by means of a support box or directly gluing the servo. The sensor will be put through the tombstone.

Now it's time to splice all the wiring to finally connect everything to the Arduino. We will leave a hole in the back of the spider house. The wires will be passed through the inside of the house until they come out through the hole in the electronics box.

Door Mechanism

With the servos in place we will mount the door. One of the ends will go to the servo shaft, and the other we will make a shaft support and pass a stick that will serve as a shaft. This will be placed at the same height as the servo.

We will connect all the wires to the Arduino in the pins indicated in the schematic.

We will test the mechanism and make the appropriate adjustments if we want to modify the speed of the mechanism.

Once the operation has been checked, we proceed to the decoration. This is a step that can be done as you wish.

We have painted the entire system with black spray and we have covered with cotton all the wiring.

Finally we glue the spider to a stick and mount it to the servo shaft. We add some small details with small pieces of wood and other accessories.
