Spicy and Healthy Fruit Rollup (Fruit Leather)

I've been trying to find healthy recipes recently, but nothing has come close to my spicy snacks I always eat like golos and chamoy candies! I've tried all kinds of substitutes: natural fruit, "spicy" mixed nuts or coconut chips, but nothing has come even close.

In the end, I decided my spicy snack should:

  1. Be Healthy
  2. Include Fruit
  3. Have a really spicy and tangy twist

It took 5 hours to dehydrate and get it right, but the recipe I ended up with is now my favorite. The leather cut well, dehydrate well, and taste fantastic! :D

In this instructable, I'm going to share my recipe for spicy fruit leather, as well as all the tips and tricks to get the best results.

Supplies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fruit (I used strawberries, blueberries and mango would work as well)
  • 2 teaspoons agave syrup
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice Tajin or any chilly powder
  • Any kind of liquid chamoy

Materials:

  • Blender Spatula
  • Off-set spatula
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper Brush

I like to taste the spicy kick so I decided to add a generous amount of each of the spicy elements and use more than one kind of spice.

Step 2: Preheating the Oven

What I found out from this part of the recipe in other recipes is that they used a dehydrated which I didn't have, so I had to use other alternatives

Preheat oven to 140 degrees (or as low as your oven will go).

Prepare a lined baking sheet by lining with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Step 3: Blend All of Your Ingredients

I used a Nutribullet, but you can use a regular blender or a food processor

In a food processor or blender, puree fruit with sweetener, lemon juice, tajin, and chamoy until perfectly smooth.

Step 4: Add the Ingredients

Pour pureed fruit evenly over the baking sheet.

I didn't have one that fit the toaster oven that I used, so what I had to do is take the rack and wrapped it in aluminum which worked just as good!

Step 5: Bake/ Dehydrate

Place in oven and bake for 3-6 hours, until set and no longer sticky to the touch.

This can be a long process, but it's worth it. Just go and watch a movie or a couple! Have some fun while your leather!

Step 6: Peel Off

Allow to cool, then remove from the baking mat or parchment paper.

This has to be done with precision in order to make sure you don't rip it or accidentally destroy it.

Step 7: Add Chamoy and Tajin

Spread a thin layer of chamoy and then add more tajin to the top of that to create a sort of “breading”

Step 8: Cut Into Strips

Cut into 1 inch strips and roll up in parchment paper or wax paper and secure with a ribbon or tape

Step 9: Finish Up!
