Spicy Indian Homestyle Chicken

Check out this spicy and easy to cook Indian chicken recipe. This recipe serves up to 4 people.

Marinate the Chicken

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pound boneless organic free range chicken
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoon plain yogurt
  • A half squeeze of lemon

Start by washing the chicken by running it under cold water. Add the washed chicken along with the other ingredients into a large bowl and mix thoroughly. Cover chicken marinate with cling wrap and let sit for 6-8 hours in the refrigerator.

Gather the Ingredients

For the chicken you will need

  • 5 red onions
  • A piece of ginger
  • 5-6 cloves of garlic
  • 2 green chilies
  • 3 Star Anise
  • 1/2 to 1 inch Cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
  • 2-3 Cardamum
  • 2-3 cloves

In a small bowl combine the black pepper, coriander seeds, cardamum, and cloves.

Chop Vegetables

Peel 5-6 garlic cloves and piece of ginger - set aside. Finely chop the red onions and set aside.

Adding the Oil

Set a large pan on the stove and set the gas to medium heat. Add 30-40 ml oil to the pan.

Now add the chopped red onions and marinated chicken to the pan. Using a wooden spatula mix the two ingredients and cover with a plate. Let cook for about 7 minutes.

Grinding Spices

Lightly roast the spice mix (the one with black pepper, cardamum, coriander seeds, and cloves) in a small pan. Once roasted, pour mix into a mortar and pestle and crush to a powder. Refer to the images above for further instruction.

Wash 2 plum tomatoes and chop into small pieces. Grate the peeled garlic cloves and ginger.

Adding Spices to the Chicken

Spices Needed

  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala (for garnish)

Add these spices to the chicken and mix well.

Adding the Ground Spices and Grated Ginger Garlic

Add the crushed spices and the grated ginger and garlic to the chicken pot.

Adding the Final Ingredients

Add the 1/2 teaspoon of garam masala to the chicken. Then, add the chopped plum tomatoes and sliced green chilies. Mix well and cover with plate. Let cook at medium heat for 12- 15 minutes, making sure to stir every few minutes.

It's Ready

Open the lid and let the chicken cook for another 3-5 minutes. Stirring in between. Check the tenderness of the chicken to ensure that it is cooked. Pour chicken into a bowl, garnish with chopped coriander leaves, and serve with naan bread or basmati rice. Enjoy !
