These gummy candies may look sweet, but beware….they are deceptively spicy.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup boiling hot Water
  • ½ tsp Kool-Aid Mix
  • 2 packets Unflavored Gelatin
  • 2 tbsp Sugar
  • 1-2 fresh Chili Peppers or 5-10 dried peppers

Other things you will need:

  • Jar/mug (must be able to hold hot water)
  • Measuring cup (microwavable)
  • Spoon
  • Knife
  • Candy Mold

Slice the Spice

With a knife, cut your peppers into pieces. I cut the habaneros in half and sliced the jalapeno.

If you will be using dried peppers, you don’t need to cut them.

Hot Water

  1. Place the peppers into a jar or mug and then pour in 1 cup of boiling hot water.
  2. Wait for the water to cool.
  3. When the water has reached room temperature, it should be spicy and ready to use.

Don’t sniff the water, it might make your nose cry.

You only really need ½ a cup of water to make a batch of gummies, but it’s always good to have extra just in case you spill or want to make a second batch.

Mix

  1. Measure out 1/2 cup of spicy water into a microwavable measuring glass.
  2. Microwave for 2 minutes.
  3. Remove from microwave.
  4. Stir in in 2 tbsp sugar.
  5. Stir in 1/2 tsp Kool-Aid mix.
  6. Stir in 2 packets of unflavored gelatin.
  7. If a lot of gelatin is left undissolved, microwave the mixture for 30 seconds and stir again.
  8. Scoop out any chunks of gelatin that may be floating on top.

Pour and Wait

  1. Pour the mixture into a candy mold.
  2. Place in refrigerator for an hour or so to set, or in the freezer for 20 minutes, or just leave them out at room temperature for a few hours.
  3. Once they've solidified, you can remove them from mold and enjoy.

I don’t know how to quantitatively measure the spiciness of each of the gummies I made using the different peppers. So, I’ll just let you know how many peppers I put per cup of water and I’ll try to describe the spice level.

2 Habaneros, 1 cup Water: (mixed with Orange Kool-Aid) Spiciest of the three. Has a bite to it, but doesn’t set your mouth on fire. Wouldn’t want to pop a whole one into my mouth, but if I did it wouldn’t be terrible. Best enjoyed squirrel-style, (in tiny bites over a longer period of time). Could eat more than one but would rather have something less spicy.

1 Jalapeno, 1 cup Water: (mixed with Green Apple Kool-Aid) Moderately spicy. Just enough spice it give it a kick. The heat isn’t overpowering and doesn’t distract from the overall flavor of the gummy. Green Apple Kool-Aid adds a sour taste which made this gummy sweet, sour and spicy. Strange, yet tasty.

5 Dried Japanese Chili Peppers, 1 cup Water: (mixed with Cherry Kool-Aid) Spice is barely noticeable, would feed these to a child.
