SpeedBreaker Electricity

The project deals with producing power using speed-breakers. Such speed-breakers can be used in places like toll plazas where there are speed-breakers needed. In such places a small amount of electricity can be generated where it can be used to light up street lights. There are about 350 toll plazas in India itself. As many as thousand vehicles pass through them daily. This can generate a quiet good amount of electricity with lower costs. The initial set-up though may require higher costs, as it requires underground laying of the system. This can be avoided by constructing the system with new road construction itself.

Scientific Principle

Electromagnetic Induction

It is the production of an electromotive force across a conductor when it is exposed to a varying magnetic field. It is described mathematically by Faraday's law of induction, named after Michael Faraday who is generally credited with the discovery of induction in 1831.

This amazing phenomenon is one of the main reasons we are able to use instructables too!!! As this is the principal behind electricity generation in turbines, the law of conservation of energy is preserved. The mechanical energy of the breaker is converted to electromagnetic energy then stored in batteries.

Materials Required (prototype)

It is very easy to make a prototype. It does not require any professional skill.

Hardware:

• Wood Board or Acrylic sheet (base) 2 pieces 3*3 sqft 2 to 3 inches thick

• 3 inches pipes 2 pieces 18 cm

• Clamps for motors 4 pieces

• Paints (optional)

• Glue

• Screws

Electronics:

• Motors 12v (dynamo any rpm preferrably high will do) 2 pieces

• Wheels 4 pieces 3 inches(diameter or slightly here and there)

• Dummy motors 2 pieces

• Connecting wires

• Few leds

• Voltmeter and ammeter to measure output (Optional)

Few tools may be required or help of a carpenter need.

Making Base for Prototype

Firstly, cut a piece of size 22 cm by 30 cm where you want to place the speed-breaker. Next cut the piece into pieces (cut piece) into parts of 6 cm by 7.5 cm. These 4 pieces will serve as support to attach the first wood piece to the base support. Now, once the wood piece is cut, drill holes by placing the clamps giving 2.5 inches gap from the 22 cm edge on both sides. Do not fit the clamps now. Fitting the clamps now will create big difficulty to place the pipes.

First remove the nuts (one big nut) from all motors including dummy motors. Now attach the motors to the clamp. Following, this attach the wheels to the motor. Now take one motor clamp set attached with the wheel and insert it in the pipe. Fix the wheel firmly using glue. If the wheel is small don't panic use a piece of rubber track or something like it and make it large. If the wheel is slightly larger using a sandpaper rub it, the excess rubber will scrape out.

Do the same with dummy motor set and for the other pipes too.

Finally, each pipe has a motor and one side dummy motor.

The motors must have long connecting wires.

Connect this wire to leds or to a storage with a suitable capacitor acting as filter.

We used 100 microF capacitor of withstanding 5.6v

Now attach the pipes finally to the base. Make the circuit, attach the support to base and to the other wood.

Place the lights in way you want, also you can paint it. Give it a road like look or your creative look.

Our project displayed at a science fair in India.
