Speed Rope (Crossfit)
This s a quick Instructable on making a Speed Jump Rope for general fitness. This rope is heavier than your typical box-store rope and the 3/16" nylon coated cable works really well. The only drawback is that mistakes can be painful if you hit your bare skin with the rope.
Parts List
For this project you will need:
- 2x - 6" long Galvanized Steel, Sched 40, 1" dia. threaded pipe
- 4x - 1" dia., Sched 40, threaded end caps
- 2x - 1/4" nylon lock-nut
- 2x - 1/4" washer
- 2x - 1/4" eye bolt
- 10 feet, 3/16" nylon coated steel cable
- 4x - heavy duty zip-ties
Tools:
- 1/4" wratchet wrench
- Wire cutters
- Drill w/ 3/8" bit
Drill Two End Caps
First you will need to drill a 3/8" hole in the end of two of the end caps.
Attach Eyebolts
After drilling the holes in the end caps, attach the eyebolts. Insert the eyebolt into the hole in the endcap and from the inside of the encap add a washer and a nylon lock-nut. Tighten the nut until the bolt is "locked" into the nylon, but not tight. The loose bolt with the washer should be able to swivel freely and rotate in the hole.
Assemble the Handles
Each handle (threaded pipe) should have one unmodified endcap and one endcap with eyebolt.
Attach the Rope
Finally, attach the "rope" cable to the handles. Each end of the 10' cable should be inserted into the eyebolt and folded over so that 5 to 6" overlap. Tighten zip ties over the cable to ensure the "fold" is tight and hold the cable in place.
