Speculative Fiction: Eden Emotion Watch 3D
Materials Needed:
This is an easy and effective software to use to create 3D models of any artifacts a user would like to create. It is free and includes free lessons that allow you to understand how to manage the software. It also automatically saves all of your work which allows you to go back and continue creating.
Creating the First Eden Watch Iteration
1. Begin with clicking on "Create a new design"
2. This will lead you into a working plane in where you will click on the shape "Tube" and place it on the center
3. Clicking on the Tube will allow you to flip, expand and adjust the shape in any way you want
4. After arranging it upright your shape should look similar to image 5
5. Clicking on the shape will pull up a menu that allows you to change the color of the shape
Creating the Watches Top
6. You will then select the polygon shape on the shape menu to the right of the screen.
7. After placing the shape on the screen you will thin it out and adjust it to your desired size. Ensure the shape is not larger then the Tube.
8. Using the triangle shape on the polygon that appears when clicked on you will move the figure up or down until it is above the Tube height.
9. Move the polygon towards the top of the tube and adjust as needed till the polygon rests fully on top of the Tube. Your figure should look like image 3.
10. Once the polygon and Tube are on your desired position you will press Shift on your computer and select both the tube and polygon.
11. This will bring up a menu that allows you to group both figures together. Click on the shape that says Group and your figure should look like image 4.
Creating the Eden Watch Screen
12. Select a polygon from the shape menu to your right. Place it on you work plane.
13. Adjust it to have a smaller height compared to the original polygon created previously.
14. Using the menu that pops up when selecting on the shape move the edges bar from 6 to 8 edges
15. Use the triangle button when clicking on the shape and move it up or down until it is resting on top of the original polygon.
16. Once the polygon is on top of the original polygon you will select the hole button to the right of the menu that comes up when you select on a shape. Your figure should look like image 5.
17. Press on the Shift key on your computer and select the original polygon and the hole polygon. Press on the group button.
18. This should create a hole in the original polygon. Your figure should look like image 6.
Finishing the Screen and Last Touch Ups
19. Select a polygon shape and flatten it out completely. Change the color to black.
20. Using the up and down triangle shape move the black polygon so it rest where the hole is on the watch. Adjust as needed until the black polygon rests on the hole. Your figure should look like image 2.
21. Selecta cylinder shape and adjust it until it is completely flat and a oval shape.
22. Move the oval shape onto on of the corners of the watch. Your figure should look like image 4.
23. To create the vibrating notification select a box and adjust it to be flat and in a rectangle shape.
24. Move the rectangle shape towards the watch till it rest on the top of the Tube. Your figure should look like image 6.
25. Your final result should look like image 7.
Creating the Second Iteration of the Eden Watch
Reflection:
In creating the second iteration I wanted to make it look less like a common watch that we see in todays society. I wanted to incorporate the floating screen which is something that is futuristic in a sense.
1. Similar to the process in the first iteration, select the Tube shape and adjust it so that it is upright.
2. Change the color to black.
3. Select the text shape. Upon clicking on the Text a menu will pop up which will allow you to change what the text says and how thick or thin you want it to be.
4. Change the thickness to 0 and the text to your desired time. I choose to do 11:50.
5. Once the text has your desired time change the color to white. This will allow the text to be noticeable when added to the Tube.
Adding the Time and Vibration Notification to the Eden Watch
6. Using the up and down adjustments adjust the Text onto the black Tube.
7. Ensure the Text/Time rests on top of the band. Your figure should look like image 1.
8. To add the vibrating component select a square and flatten and adjust it until it looks like a triangle. Similar to image 3. Change the color to light grey or whatever color you desire.
9. Adjust as needed until the small rectangle is resting on the bottom of the inside of the tube. Similar to image 4.
Adding the Floating Screen to the Eden Watch 2
10. Select cone shape and place it on the work plane.
11. Using the menu around the figure adjust the cone until the point is on the bottom of the plane and the wide part is upwards.
12. Flatten the cone to the left and right. Then flatten it so it looks like a 2D shape.
13. Change the color to light grey or the color your desire.
14. Move the cone figure to be placed above the band but not touching the band.
15. Your final product should look like image 4
The cone represents the screen that pops up upon the band being tapped by the user.
Creating the Final Iteration of the Eden Watch
Reflection:
The inspiration behind this design was driving away from the typical society standard watch. I wanted to maintain the band concept as well as the floating screen. I figured incorporating a weird shape would make the watch unique.
1. From previous iterations, select the Tube shape and adjust it to be upright.
2. Change the Tube to be blue or any color you desire.
3. Select a Box and place it on the work plane.
4. Adjust the Box to be thin from left to right but big in height. The Box should look similar to image 5.
Creating a Hole in the Watch Band
5. Move the rectangle Box to be above the blue Tube. Ensure it does not touch the bottom of the blue Tube.
6. Ensure you change the Box shape from solid to hole.
7. Once it looks similar to image 2 press Shift on your computer and select both the Tube and Box.
8. This will allow you to group both shapes together. Once they group together a hole on the Tube will appear. It should look like image 4.
Adding Notification and Screen Component to Eden Watch
9. Select the Icosahedron and place it on the work plane. Size it until it fits perfectly between both ends of the tube. Change the color to black. Your figure should look like image 2.
10. Select the Box shape and place it on the work plane.
11. Adjust it to be a small rectangle. Change it to light blue and place on the bottom of the Tube. Your figure should look like image 4.
Finalizing the Final Eden Watch Iteration
14. Move the cone figure to be placed above the Icosahedron but not touching it.
15. Your final figure should look like image 4.
