Sparkling Salt Snowflake

Bring a little bit of winter beauty inside by creating this sparkling salt snowflake. This technique is a fun way to capture the unpredictability of watercolor and individuality of snowflakes to decorate your cozy home.

Supplies

12x12 watercolor paper
Watercolor paint (blue, pink, purple, etc.)
Water
Tape
Paintbrush
Glue
Coarse Salt
Snowflake stencil

1. Tape watercolor paper down.
2. Paint water over blank paper to create a wash.
3. Using watercolor paints of your choice, paint a wash of color. Try dropping in colors to create blooms.
4. Sprinkle on coarse salt in wet areas to encourage more watercolor blooms.
5. Let painting dry, when it’s dry lightly brush off the salt.

Creating the Snowflake

1. Use a snowflake stencil, either one you made or a purchased one.
2. Place the stencil on top of the background.
3. Trace inside the stencil with glue.
4. Generously cover the glue with coarse salt and carefully remove stencil.
5. Let the snowflake dry completely.

1. Shake off excess salt.
2. Optional: Paint snowflake with watercolor paint colors of your choice.
*I have decided I liked my snowflake left white instead of using the watercolor.
3. Peel tape and enjoy your unique piece of winter art!
