- Start another burner on medium heat for the saucepan adding 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil.
- Gather all other cooking tools for easy access.
Chop the Vegetables
- Chop up the mushrooms, tomato, and garlic. Olives are already chopped in the can.
Cook the Garlic
- Add the chopped garlic to the pan and stir in the oil.
- Wait until the garlic is nice and browned to add the rest of the vegetables. This gives the garlic a nice roasted flavor.
Cook the Vegetables
- Add the tomatoes, mushrooms, and olives to the pan.
- Add 1 cup of Merlot to let the vegetables cook in the wine. This gives the vegetables a more robust flavor.
- Add ¼ cup of basil to the vegetables and let them cook for 5-7 minutes.
Adding the Tomato Sauce
- Add half of the Prego jar to the pan and stir.
- After mixing the tomato sauce with the vegetables, put heat on low and let the sauce simmer.
- Check on the sauce while cooking the noodles in Step 7 to ensure it will not overcook.
- To identify overcooked sauce, look toward the edges of the sauce pan. The sauce is overcooked when clumps are visible and stuck to the pan surface.
- If sauce is overcooking lower the burner heat, remove clumps with the spoon, and stir them into the sauce.
- If needed, add more wine and basil for more flavor.
Cooking the Noodles
- Add half of the bag (16 oz) of long spaghetti noodles to the boiling water.
- Stir frequently for 11 minutes.
Bake the Garlic Bread
- Preheat the oven to 425℉ directly after putting the noodles in boiling water.

Finishing Up
- Strain the noodles once they are completely cooked.
- Take the bread out of the oven.
- Keep the sauce and noodles separate so the noodles will not get soggy if there are leftovers.
- Now you should be ready to eat!
