Spaceship Animation

I am in 11th grade, and this is my first time animating a reel. My goal was not realism but rather to visualize the start of an exciting odyssey as the rocket disappears from the screen to warp through time. I hope you enjoy my space spectacular!

The pictures below were taken from my phone and are best viewed individually to see complete detail.

Supplies

All you need is Procreate Pocket, Canva Pro, and a stylus.

I downloaded Procreate Pocket on my phone and opened a new draft the size of my phone. Then I went to actions and turned on animation assist.

Next, I created several frames, designed the spaceship using the selection function for precise shapes, and copied it to each frame while slightly changing the placement of the spaceship to give the impression of motion.

After that, I designed the backdrop using the Nebula brush and set it as the background on every frame.

Once that was done, I decided what story the reel would tell visually. In this version, I added an image of Earth and a segment when the spaceship disappeared then reappeared in a new location.

I designed the Earth using the selection function to ensure I didn't mess up what was already in the image (the rocket ship and background). You could add Mars, Venus, or another ship.

Since you can only have 54 frames in Procreate, I had to duplicate the artwork and continue working in a new project.

Next, I duplicated the spaceship and changed the color of the spaceship to show that it was powering up as it prepared to blast off. The selection tool was utilized to make sure only parts of the image could be altered. I also added a spot of light on the spaceship using the Flare brush.

The next step is annoying but necessary. I went to layers and duplicated the background and merged it with each slide. This will be important later.

Then I went to blur in the adjustments menu and started blurring the background then merging it with the spaceship. I also added some glitch from the effects menu to the entire thing.

Finally, I duplicated the background to show how the ship disappeared, created a new background using the Nebula brush, and put the spaceship on it.

Both completed reels were moved to a Canva mobile video. From there, you can add sound effects and music to your heart's desire. I hope you enjoyed your tour. Please return for a space odyssey any time and tell me where your travels lead!

Keep Tinkering!

If you love your artwork but your animated reel does not look quite right, tap on the frame/frames and mess around with "hold duration" until you get a look that seems smoother and better. The tempo and type of music you choose to accompany your images will add to the overall effect so you may need to try different versions.
