Southern Baked Biscuits and Gravy
Biscuits and Gravy is a breakfast dish very common in the south. It is a family favorite! Usually made with sausage, we had to improvise and use bacon.
Supplies
Biscuit Ingredients
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 TB of baking powder
- 1 TB of salt
- ⅓ cup of cold, unsalted butter
- ¾ cup of milk
Gravy Ingredients
- 4 thick slices of bacon
- 1 cup of milk
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- salt/pepper to season
Making the Biscuits
- Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.
- Cut in the cold butter until it resembles small peas.
- Slowly add ¾ cup of milk and mix with a fork until the dough is just slightly sticky. Use more milk if needed.
- Remove the dough from the bowl and fold over 10 times on a floured surface.
- Flatten the dough using your hands until it is about 1 inch thick. Then cut out biscuits using a biscuit cutter (or circular cookie cutter).
- Bake bisucuits at 220c for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown while making the gravy below.
Making the Gravy
- Cook the bacon in a deep skillet over medium heat until crisp, about 10 minutes. Remove bacon to a paper towel-lined plate and keep the grease in the pan.
- Gradually stir flour into the grease so that no lumps form, then mix in the milk, continuing to cook on low heat, and stir until thickened.
- Crumble the bacon into the gravy and season with salt and pepper to your liking before serving.
- Pour gravy onto biscuits and enjoy :)
