Sophisticated(maybe...) Do It Yourself Fountain

20180501_130721.jpg

That's right, I'm back with a new project, for my school, this time! This time I'll show you how to make a fountain that's looks sophisticated... or at least try to. Don't worry if it doesn't turn out all right, there is room for improvements. If there's any way to improve this project or if I might of made a mistake, leave it in the comments. With that, here are some examples to download for how this fountain should work. Alrighty then, let's get started.

Inspiration

Homemade Perpetual Vortex Fountain

Before we get started, this project was inspired from this Youtube video. Go check it out. All credits go to maker of the video.

Gather Materials

You will need these for the fountain:

Gather Tools

These tools aren't necessary but it helps for craftsmanship

  • Laser cutter
  • Glue gun
  • Acrylic glue
  • 3D Printer (optional)

If you don't have those big shop tools, then I suggest researching methods to cut acrylic.

Artwork (optional)

While your fountain will work if there is not art piece, it feels lively or more peaceful to have something on it. The best part is that you can use anything from a statue to artwork from a show. Use your imagination and get creative.

I used the 3D printer to make this part from a stl file from Thingiverse. (PS: if you can guess what it is and where it's from, give yourself two claps and leave the answer in the comments, you'll get nothing but respect...sorry)

Cut Out Tank Dimensions

I used the laser since I don't know any tools that cut acrylic but if you can it out a different way, do it. Otherwise, I provided the Rhino file needed to cut it out. You can edit some things to make certain layers cut out right or change measurements or even change the file type to suit your preferences. Go mess around with it and see what you can come up with. If you want, decorate it. The hole is there so that getting the pump in there is much of a hassle which it wall be talked about later.

Cut Out Drain

It's in the file. The holes might be tricky to cut out especially if you don't have a laser but there always another way to do things.

Cut Out Water Wall

The wall is to prevent spilling over about four layers should do the trick. You can also do something else entirely if that's your thing. The file is available, again edit however you want to.

Glue Water Wall and Decoration to Drain

I'd personally do the decoration first then the wall but it's up to you to do whatever you want and how you do it.

Place Pump Inside Tank

The hole should be cut out so that the input plug can easily go through it. Another hole is cut out with tank hole so that the wire can fit. After that, I'd personally glue the whole hole (that sounded weird) with hot glue and acrylic glue and part of the wire so that water isn't dripping out and the pump doesn't move.

Place Drain on Top of Tank

Note: Mine is not glued on so that the tank can get water in it easily. If you have any better ideas, leave it in the comments.

Place Straw on Drain and Pump

First measure how long should the straw be from the pump to the drain. The video before should explain a little bit.

Fill the Tank With Water and Refine If Needed

Fill it up and test for any spillage or any other errors.

Enjoy Your Peaceful Time
