Sonic Screwdriver Out of a Toothpick (11th Doctor)

tiny sonic3.png

I like tiny things, and I like Doctor Who, so here's a tiny sonic! This sonic could have been used in episode 608, where the Tardis shrinks to fit inside a humanoid robot.

The 3D printed Tardis in the photo is adapted from https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:367130 and the large sonic at the end is from https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:169870.

Mark a 2-cm length of the toothpick in pencil, towards one end but before the toothpick narrows. Make markings at 11, 14, and 18 mm to aid you in carving the handle.

Carve Toothpick

Carve the handle (not the shaft yet) with the X-acto knife, as shown. Keep the sonic attached to the rest of the toothpick.

Mark in pencil four lines around the shaft of the sonic so they are evenly spaced. Slide the point of the X-acto knife on both sides of each line to create grooves.

Paint

Use another toothpick for the small details. Paint the handle cream and the shaft silver first, then paint the middle black and the grooves copper. Paint copper rings between colors. Once painted, carefully cut the sonic off the rest of the toothpick.

Make End Tips

This is the most difficult step. Very carefully cut four slits around the end and peel them outward. You may want to practice on a plain toothpick first. Paint the freshly cut end silver, then add a blob of green for the light.

Done!
