Solution to Messy BLT's
Every year, I plant about 40 tomato plants and harvest several bushels of tomatoes. Thai year about 1/2 of the plants died due to the 24 inches of rain we got in the spring. The plants that survived produced very few tomatoes and they are all smaller than a lemon; most a little bigger than a golf ball. Every time I made a sandwich, i would cut a tomato into 4 pieces and apply some mayo, the slices would slide off into my lap. I came up with this idea to save my sanity.
Tools & Supplies
! tomato 1/2 the width of your bread slice
2 slices of bread
1 kitchen knife
A cutting surface, like a cutting board or a plate. Don't cut on the cabinet surface.
Cut the Tomato Into 4 Connected Pieces
Core the tomato & cut off other end. If you don't cut off the end, it will be tough biting through it. (1st photo)
Slice down the middle of tomato while keeping ends square with the cutting surface. Do not cut completely through it. Leave about 3/16 inch of thickness. I hold the knife point down & let the point hit the plate surface, but not the cutting blade go all the way down. (2nd photo)
Rotate tomato 90 degrees while keeping ends square with the cutting surface (3rd photo)
Make 2 more cuts while in this position, making 4 slices. Don't cut all the way through.
Place the Connected Slices on Your Bread
You now have 4 slices, all connected. Open them up and place on your bread slice. In the 2nd photo, I am holding it up so you can see how they are all held together. The 3rd photo shows them on the bread. Add the other ingredients to taste, slap on another slice of bread and enjoy without a slice falling in your lap.
Last Year's Tomatoes
For comparison. here is a photo I took of some of last year's crop. Oh well, there is always next year. LOL
