Sock Animal Mouse
First of all, I'd like to say that I came up with this idea by browsing Pinterest. I changed it a little to fit what I wanted it to be. It is pretty much a little mouse with a sweater made out of socks. And I warn you now, save all of your scraps in a scrap pile or something, we will need them at the end, so don't throw them away! Also, apology in advance, this is my first instructable so it may be hard to follow.
Materials
For this project you will need the following:
- A pair of black ankle socks (any size)
- One striped or coloured sock (around the same size as the black socks)
- White and Black thread
- Sewing needle
- Scissors
- Black Yarn
- Basic knowledge of sewing
- Pencil (optional)
I used a striped pink/grey sock for my mouse's sweater.
Cutting Out the Head
The head of a mouse is a mostly triangular shaped so for our mouse's head we are cutting out the heel of one of the black socks in a triangular way (sorry, might be a bit confusing, the pictures show it better than I can explain it).
Sewing the Head
Take your head and turn it inside-out. Then sew up the longest open side (hypotenuse) with your black thread. I don't know the official name for it but I used a stitch that you go through both pieces of fabric, then around the outside, of both and back through. I don't know if that made any sense, but whatever way keeps the inside from coming out works.
The Sweater
For the sweater, we are going to use the top of the striped/coloured sock. Cut this out as shown above in the pictures. Again, save all of the scraps even though we will only use the portion that comes up your leg.
Sewing on the Sweater
Ready your white thread, and turn your head and sweater inside out. Fit the head over the top of the sweater as shown in the pictures. Make sure you use the very top of the sock for the top of the sweater so you have that nice collar. Sew them together. When it is inside-out, it may not look as good as you want it to, but that's okay, when you turn it right-side-out it'll look much better.
Cutting Out the Ears
You can do the ears in many different ways. You could do it like my idea picture, or you could do them as I did. For my ears, cut out a portion of your other black sock and cut out two, relatively identical, circles for the outside ear (I made mine kinda big, like Despereaux). Then take the heel of your striped/coloured sock, (if you have a colour other than pink for your striped/coloured sock and you want pink, felt works just as well as another sock) and cut it into two more relatively identical circles smaller than the first two.
Sewing the Ears
For sewing the ears, put your smaller coloured circle inside your black circle (use pictures for reference). Take your black thread and sew them together. Then (have you mouse head and sweater turned right-side-out) cut a tiny hole in the head where you want your ears to go. Pinch the bottom of your ears and stuff them through the hole. Sew them in and fluff them out to make them look nice.
Foot \ Feet \ Bottom
Now, go back to your first black sock. You should have the toe left. Take that toe and chop off the very end of it (use pictures for reference). Now sew (everything inside-out again) that onto the end of the sweater. Again slip it over the sweater so when it is right-side-out it looks like it is coming from underneath. Make sure to leave a hole for stuffing.
Stuffing
Now take all those scraps you've been saving! Cut them into little pieces (the little-er the better!). Then start stuffing (right-side-out again). That optional pencil at the beginning can be used here if your fingers can't reach all the way into the head. Sorry, my pictures are kinda blurry.
Tail / Finishing Off
Now cut out a piece of yarn as long as you want your tail to be and stick it in the hole you were using to stuff. Then sew up the rest of the hole to close it off.
Done!
Hope you enjoyed!
