Soccer Stadium With Retractable Roof

Since I was little, soccer has been my favorite thing in the world. The sport itself is known as " the beautiful game". From the style of play, and the players that are on the field, I idolized every single aspect I knew about. Growing up, I realized that there are even more elements to the game. One of these components is the architecture of every stadium in the world. Seeing these masterpieces from an architectural perspective has made me realize the effort, money, and more that go into making a stadium. So for this contest, I decided to do a wooden stadium with my own twist; a retractable roof. The stadium is inspired by the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg (NOTE: ALL MEASUREMENTS ARE IN CENTIMETERS).

Supplies

  • Resistol 950
  • Silver spray paint for wood
  • Turf
  • Plywood pieces
  • 1 piece of 30 height 40 length cm
  • 2 pieces of 20 height 40 length cm
  • 2 pieces of 20 height 32 length cm
  • 2 pieces of 10 height 40 length cm
  • 2 pieces of 10 height 32 length cm
  • White paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Black paper shade
  • Ping-pong ball
  • Ruler

Cutting Turf

To start off, cut the grass to the shape of the base, which is 30 in height and 40 in length. This will be to prepare to glue the turf onto the base in the second step.

Glue Turf Onto Base

The next step is to glue the turf onto the base. The first thing you will do is use the Resistol 950, and apply it to the base. BE GENEROUS. Leave something that's heavy on top of the grass, in order to ensure maximum efficiency. I recommend leaving it for 15-20 minutes.

Paint Lines Onto Soccer Field

The next step is to get your white paint and paint the lines as shown in the picture above, using a brush. Try to use a ruler or something that can ensure straight lines all along the field.

Paint Plywood Pieces

After painting the turf, we will spray paint the plywood pieces that are necessary, which are 8 in total. After the first coat, leave the plywood piece to dry approximately 5-10 minutes. Make sure to at least have 2 coats on each piece.

Assemble the Stadium

After this, we will put our Resistol 950 to use, by assembling all of the plywood pieces together. Attach the 1 piece of 20 height 32 length piece to the base by placing some glue at the bottom of the 20 height and 32 lengths. After this, attach the 20 height 40 lengths to the 20 height 32 lengths by its side, by placing glue on the edge of the 20 height 32 lengths. Repeat this process for the remaining pieces.

Assemble Roof of the Stadium

After you have finished attaching the 4 pieces of plywood to the base, attach 1 piece of the 10 height and 40 lengths, to the piece of plywood that measures 20 height and 40 lengths. Make sure that, at most, half of the width is hanging out of the stadium. Repeat for the missing side. After this, attach the piece that measures 10 height and 32 lengths, on top of the 20 height and 32 lengths. WARNING: you will attach these pieces directly to the pieces that measure 10 height and 40 lengths. Again, make sure at most half of the width is sticking out of the structure. Repeat for the missing side.

Assembling Retractable Roof

After this, we will work on creating the retractable roof. You will need black paper shades, where you will measure and cut 2 pieces of 18 1/2 height and 32 1/2 length; one for each side. Usually, paper shades come with an adhesive sticker. So, peel off the adhesive sticker, and attach it to the 10-height and 32-length piece of the roof. Make sure to attach to the side that is facing inwards. Repeat for the missing side. After this, you can accommodate the roof however you like. Whether it be hanging from the sides, hidden, or scrunched up. When extending to cover the stadium, simply grab both ends of the shade and meet them in the middle. Place the ping-pong ball in the arena, and you're done!
