Snack Pack

I made this snack pack to fit a narrow water bottle (8.25" circumference) so that it would not fall out. If you would like to fit a wider water bottle, you should add to the width (according to the size of your bottle) of the front flap, the front and back panels, and the front pockets.

Materials

· Cotton Canvas Fabric (1 meter)

· High loft fusible fleece interfacing (0.5 meters)

· Lining fabric (1 meter)

· Thread to match exterior fabric

· Thread to match lining fabric

· Iron

· Ironing board

· Sewing machine

· Serger/Overlock machine (optional)

· Fabric sheers

· Tracing paper

· Pen or pencil

· Scissors

· Pins

· Cutting mat

· Cotton heading tape (25 mm wide) (2 meters)

· Measuring tape

· D-rings (4) 25mm

· Rectangle Rings (2) 25 mm

Gather all of your materials. Prewash and dry all fabrics. Iron exterior and lining fabric before cutting out pieces.

On tracing paper (or other lightweight paper), trace out the following shapes:

· Front and back panel (15" x 10"). Cut out 2 of exterior fabric, 2 of lining fabric, and 2 of interfacing.

· Front flap (5" x 10"), round bottom corners. Cut out 1 of exterior fabric, 1 of lining fabric, and 1 of interfacing.

· Water bottle side pockets (6.5" x 10"). Cut out 2 of exterior fabric.

· Corner triangles (4" x 4"). Cut out 2 of exterior fabric.

Cut out all pieces.

Fuse interfacing to the wrong side of exterior fabric for the front and back panels and the front flap. Follow directions on interfacing to fuse.

· Pin both front and back panels of exterior fabric together (right sides together).

· Sew together sides and bottom with 5/8" seam allowance, serge off excess.

· Turn right side out and press.

· Repeat with lining fabric.

· Cut the heading tape into 6 pieces:

i. 2 pieces 6" long

ii. 4 pieces 16" long

· Iron one end of each piece of heading tape as follows:

i. First 1/4"

ii. Second 1"

· Sew a square on each to hold the folded end in place.

· Pin together the right sides of the exterior and lining of the front flap. Position one of the shorter pieces of heading tape in the middle between both right sides of the fabric with the unfolded side between the seams facing to the inside.

· Sew pieces together with a 5/8" seam allowance leaving the back open.

· Serge off excess.

· Turn right side out and press.

· Top stitch with a 1/4" seam allowance.

· Baste the back closed.

· Serge the edges of the front pockets, then iron the pieces.

· Hem the front pockets:

i. Top: fold over 1/2" toward the wrong side of the fabric and press. Fold over another 1/2" for a total of 1" and press. Sew with a 5/8" seam allowance.

ii. Bottom: Fold 5/8" toward the wrong side of the fabric and press. Sew with a 1/2" seam allowance.

iii. Sides: Fold 3/8" toward the wrong side and press. Sew with a 1/4" seam allowance.

· Pin and sew one side of both pockets together with a 1/2" seam allowance and press open.

· Sew the unfinished end of the other short piece of heading tape to the top middle of the front pockets with a 5/8" seam allowance and then sew again close to the top of the pocket.

· Hand stitch the center seam of the front pockets to the middle of the right side of the front panel, starting at the bottom.

· Serge edges of the pieces and press.

· Sew all edges with a 1/4" seam allowance.

· Fold in half diagonally and press.

· Attach a long piece of heading tape to each corner triangle. Place the unfinished side of the strap of heading tape 1" from the edge of the corner and sew the corner closed.

· Pin the sides of the front pockets to the side edges of the front panel. Make sure to pin the corner triangle in between the pocket and the panel with the strap facing out.

· Sew the sides of the front pocket with a 3/8" seam allowance and the a 1/4" seam allowance.

· Press the excess of the bottom of the front pockets in a reverse box pleat toward the center and sew with a 1/4" seam allowance.

· Pin the front pieces with right sides facing together.

· Sew with a 5/8" seam allowance.

· Turn right sides out and press.

· Pin the back of the flap to the back panel with the right sides together.

· 1" from each side, pin the unfinished edge of the remaining two pieces of heading tape between the right side of the flap and the right side of the back panel.

· Sew with a 5/8" seam allowance.

· Turn the right side of the panel out and press the seam allowance toward the bottom of the bag.

· Press a 5/8" seam allowance of the top of the lining toward the bottom.

· Pin the back of the lining to the back of the exterior panel with the wrong sides together. Place the pins on the exterior side.

· Top stitch all around the top of the front and back panel with a 3/8" seam allowance.

· Pull the bottom strap of heading tape through 2 D-rings.

· Pin 1 and 3/4" long fold over.

· Sew closed following stitches from the square sewn in step 5.

· Repeat for other side strap.

· Loop the top strap through both D-rings, bring back up through the top D-ring, bring back down through the gap.

· Pull the bottom strap of heading tape through 2 rectangle rings.

· Pin 1 and 3/4" long fold over.

· Sew closed following stitches from the square sewn in step 5.

· Loop the top strap through both rectangle rings, bring back up through the top rectangle ring, bring back down through the gap.
