Smoked Tri-tip With Homemade Smoker
Barbeque has always been one of the family favorites in my household, but we have never tried creating it on our own, until now. After some familiarization with "The Art of Smoking," we have created a recipe that will be half as expensive and just as good as your local barbeque place, while not requiring you to buy a pricey, space-consuming smoker in the making of it. With that being said, let's get started!
Supplies
Dry rub:
1.5 tbsp mustard powder
1 tbsp pepper
0.5 tbsp cajun seasoning
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp onion powder
0.5 tbsp smoked paprika
1 tbsp salt
Homemade smoker:
metal coffee can
tin foil
a jigsaw
a drill
a grill
Meat:
2.5 lbs Tri-tip
Spray:
3 tbsp worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup apple juice
1 cup cider vinegar
Dry Rub
The dry rub is a fairly straightforward part of the creation of this barbeque. All you have to do is combine all the dry rub ingredients together and apply it evenly to all the areas of the Tri-tip. after this, you will be ready to smoke it!
Make Your Smoker.
This smoker is literally made with items from around your house and will cost you practically nothing. This is a great alternative to buying a regular, expensive smoker. Take off all the paper that is on the can and drill a starter hole about 2 inches off the bottom of the can. Then, use your jigsaw to finish the cut. Cut 8-10 holes at the bottom of the can. Then, cut an aluminum circle slightly bigger than your can and cut 6-7 holes in the foil. Finally, fold the edges of the aluminum foil down and your smoker is ready to smoke!
Woodchips
Woodchips are what actually give this barbeque its amazing flavor, so it is important to get it right. You can use whatever woodchips you want, but we use hickory, which turned out well for us. First, soak the woodchips in water for 30 minutes (this is VERY IMPORTANT) and strain using your smoker. After that, put the smoker right under the grill rack. Set at 500 degrees Fahrenheit until the chips are smoking. And now, your meat is ready to be put in!
Smoking
Put your meat in at 220-225 degrees Fahrenheit for 6 hours. Combine your spray mix ingredients together. Spray mixture evenly on the meat until coated once per hour. Once the 6 hours are up, take it out and let sit for 30 minutes. And you have your own, perfect, homemade barbeque ready to enjoy!
