Smart RGB Ikea Solbo Owl Lamp

Hello!

This is a small project to "hack" the Ikea Solbo Owl Lamp and make it a bit smarter.

Supplies

Ikea Solbo Owl Lamp

Wemos D1 mini

Micro USB Cable

WS2812B RGB LED Ring with 12 LED's

Tesa TACK Adhesive Putty

Wires/dupont cables

Basic soldering iron

Prepare the Lamp

Remove the bottom 3 screws.

Cut the side of the clips holding down the cable. One cut on the side would be enough to release the old cable, and still reuse it with the new cable.

Unclip the middle bulb socket. It's held in place by 3 clips.

Prepare the Wemos D1

This project uses WLED to control the LED's

I believe the easiest way to flash the Wemos is by using the web installer install.wled.me

Plug in your ESP to a USB port.

Hit "Install" and select the correct COM port.

Get WLED installed and connected in less than 3 minutes!

Wiring

Connect the LED Ring to the Wemos.

Reassemble the Lamp

The 12 LED ring fits exactly in the center. I fixed in in place with Tesa TACK Adhesive Putty.

The Wemos can be placed on the side, the USB cable can go thru the existing clip then out thru the existing cutout.

WiFi Setup

Use a WiFi device to connect to the access point WLED-AP using the default password wled1234.

Go to the IP 4.3.2.1 in your browser to control your lights. You should also be able to connect to wled.me if in access point mode (embedded DNS server).

To connect your WLED module to your home Wifi:

1. Click on the Config (gear) icon to edit your WLED module settings and choose "Wifi Setup".

2. For most home networks, simply enter your Wifi network's name and network password. You can also change the mDNS address for your WLED module here.

3. Click Save & Connect at the bottom of the page.

4. Reconnect your device to your home's Wifi network.

5. Check the device list in your router's user interface for the IP of the WLED device within your local network.

Control the Lamp

For easy automatic discovery, use the WLED app.

Android

iOS

There is also a home assistant integration available.

Have fun with the WLED software and the new lamp !

Thank You !
