Small Space Under Stairs
The objective of this project is to create a model of a small and efficient space underneath stairs. The scale is 1:10 and the stairs were laser cut while the objects under the stairs were 3D printed.
Supplies
Tools used include a 3D printer, laser cutter, and glue. Materials used include MDF and filament.
Brainstorming:
There will only be two walls so that the viewer can see inside and then there will be two sets of stairs with a landing in the middle. The stair railings will attach to the railing by a slot as shown on the right so that the railings can slide onto the landing.
The next step is to design and create a 3D model to have a base and dimensions to look back at when creating the file to laser cut.
Prototyping:
This first prototype was created out of cardboard to avoid wasting materials and to test the design. This is a good first prototype but there are a couple issues; The stairs are too wide so the end railing is off of the landing and the holes in the railing for the stairs are too big.
This second prototype shows the railings and is better but the holes in the railings for the stairs are too small this time. With one more small cut, they will fit well.
This third prototype worked well as everything fits and was able to be glued together.
The next step is to create what will be put under the stairs. There will be three, 3D printed items that will be added to efficiently use the small space; A desk, a chair, and shelves will be added. All of these items have been scaled to match the scale of the stairs and to fit underneath the stairs well.
The final step is to assemble. After putting everything together, this is the final product.
