Slow Cooker (Egg Incubator)

It seemed like a nice idea to build a complete automatic egg incubator. You turn it on and in 21 days later you have a chick.

Supplies

What materials do you need:

  1. 6 mm MDF sheet
  2. Arduino UNO
  3. 12 volt motor
  4. 5 to 230 volt relais
  5. 12 volt Joy-it Motormodul
  6. DHT11–Temperature and Humidity Sensor
  7. Switch
  8. 230 volt kabel
  9. Jumperwires
  10. E27 lampsocket with a diameter of 37 mm
  11. E27 Infared lamp
  12. Shelf holders
  13. Lego mindstorms (product number: 31313)
  14. Magnets 5 x 2 mm (l x h)


What software do you need:

  1. Solidworks
  2. Arduino IDE


What machines do you need:

  1. Lasercutter
  2. 3D printer with filament

Build the Turning System

Build with the Lego mindstorms pieces the turning system.

Fabricate the Following Pieces

Pieces to lasercut

Cut the following files with the lastercutter:

  1. Cabinet file for the laser cutter (Dxf)


Pieces to print

Print the following files with the 3D printer

  1. Clamp
  2. Lampsocket
  3. Motor_holder
  4. Spacer_for_motor_to_wheel (Look out: print this piece as accurately as possible)

Put the Cabinet Together

Animation collapse

Information about animation collapse:

  1. The balk in de animation represents the egg turning system.
  2. Do NOT glue the Wooden pieces together yet.


Glue the flowing parts

  1. The ''magnets'' in the wooden parts with the 40 laser cut holes.
  2. The ''Shelf holders'' in the 4 laser cut holes on the side of the cabinet.
  3. The ''clamp'''in the 4 laser cut L-shape gaps.

Connect the Electronics

Connect the electronics with the schema.

Tip:

Connect the electronic first outside the cabinet. If it works connect it inside the cabinet.

Put the Electronics in the Cabinet

Put all electronics in the cabinet. You can use bolts and nuts to lift the elektronics. 

Place the arduino UNO in a way so you can connect the USB-B cable with the arduino.

Next place the motor in in ''moter_holder'' and connect the "spacer_for_motor_to_wheel'' to the moter. If you had build the ''turning_system'' the right way you left over with 1 gear. Put that gear on the "spacer_for_motor_to_wheel''



The Code

Shoot the code in the arduino. For the code you need to download the follow library.

  1. DHT sensor library by Adafruit


Complete the Assembly

To complete the assembly you need to:

  1. Put the ''egg_turning'' system in the cabine
  2. Place the intermediate plate in the cabinet
  3. Screw the lamp in the lampholder
