Skycrane Simulation

some years ago when i was young, i was on a absolute NASA documentary-watching frenzy, and besides of all the cool stuff involved with space, my favorite was always the curiosity rover's "sky crane" scene. i watched it so many times, i could even memorise everything what happened. for people who didn't watch the thing, i'll tell you what had actually happened(SPOILER ALERT). 1. the rover in the rocket flies to mars. 2. it descends inside a capsule near the planet. and 3, the capsule opens it's parachute and it's under-sided hatch and suddenly the rover and the skycrane detaches, and 8 rocket engines slows the fall, safely dropping the rover on mars's surface with ropes.this has really inspired me and all that, but normal people can'r just land their own car-szed rover 33.9 million miles away. so, i decided to make my own string-powered one and try to land it on trash inside my room harsh terrain.

Supplies

you will need:

tape & scissors

lego bricks

plastic straws

string

rubber band

crafting wires

stuff from your room

Make the Skycrane

get some plastic straws and line them up like the letter X. tie the center of the x with some rubber bands. after that, line up all the corners with some crafting wires. it should look like a box with a x inside it.

LEGO Rover

now it's work on the rover. get some lego bricks and make a small rover(actually any rover if it's sturdy)with wheels, eyes(camera), and a small ring at a high position(circle in picture).

Tie It Up

wrap the body and the rover with some more crafting wires(make sure the small ring goes up in the center)and tie a string at the small ring.

Play With It

to see if you're a good pilot, get some stuff from your room and set it down to make a harsh terrain. grab the skycrane at it's string part and lower the whole thing into the your-room-stuff made terrain. make sure it dosen't tip over when it lands.
