Sink Drain Chandelier

For this trash to treasure project, I decided to make a transportable LED Powered chandelier. Made out of several spare sink drains, and old hanging plant pot, and an old computer chair base. I see myself taking this chandelier on many camping trips in the future!

Gather Your Materials and Tools

Step 1: Gather your Materials and Tools

You Will need:

  • 5 Sink Drains
  • 1 Computer chair base
  • A old hanging flower pot
  • 5 sets of string LEDs
  • Some wire
  • A 13/64” drill bit
  • A power drill
  • A roll of packing tape
  • Black Spray paint
  • A heat gun

Step 2: Clean Up

When I first found my sink drains, there was server buildup of plumbers putty so I had to give my sink drains a good wash! In order to wash the drains througly I took them apart, I ended up with four different parts per sink drain, but I ended up not using the black rubber rings that came with them, it's not necessary, you can use them if you like. After giving my drains a thorough scrubbing I set them out to dry and wiped down my computer chair base. Just enough to give it a little shine.

Drilling the Holes

In order to tie the drains to my base, I first must make some small holes (using my power drill and 13/64” bit) at the end of each peg for my wire to thread through.

Wiring

Now we have to connect the sink drains to the base. I first put all of my sink drains back together (minus the rubber rings) and placed them under neath my base. Then I cut a piece of wire (Approximately 1 ½’ long) and thread it through both the middle of the drain and the computer chair base. Then I took the end of the wire under the drain and tied a simple double ‘X’ knot, effectively holding the drain in place. After that I took the end of the wire threaded through the sink drain and tied another double ‘X’ knot close to the surface of the base. (Cutting the excess off) I then repeated this process for the other five drains.

Now me must add the light to actually make our piece functional. In order to do this, i took a set of string LED's and threaded it through the top of my sink drain, placing the battery pack underneath the leg of the chair base. I then took the rest of the lights, bunched it up and stuck it inside the sink drain, taping it in with packing tape, and tape in the battery pack in place as well. I then repeated this process for the rest of the chair legs.

In order to hang my chandler I needed to put a hook on it, so I took a plastic hook from an old hanging flower pot and attached it to a metal ring form one of the sink drains using a heat gun to melt the plastic together. I then painted it black with some spray paint an attached to my chandler, I then attached it to my chandler.

Finished!
