Simple Shelving Brackets

Create simple but very strong shelving using hardwood flooring or any other hardwood. You can find pallets about anywhere if you just look for them. Here is a a great guide to finding pallets.

Materials

----Hardwood pallet. oak flooring, or any other spare hardwood

----3" deck screws. I like the star heads

----Smaller screws to fasten shelving 11\2"

----Tightbond 3 Glue

----Strong twine

----Shelving material, plyboard

Tools

------Drill

------Table Saw

------Measuring tape

------Table saw Cross-cut sled ( optional but recommended)

Now that you have found a hardwood pallet, break it down and remove the nails

Practice the utmost safety when working with power tools. Rip pieces to square using a tablesaw.

Making sure your equipment is cutting true is critical here. Using a small square to double check to verify accuracy.I used a cross cut sled to cut my pieces. This is about the safest way to cut accurate angles. Here are some plans and ideas for Cross-Cut sleds

I recommend using the strongest glue possible here. Tightbond 3 is what I use. Glue up all the ends and spread the glue to coat it completely. Allow to dry for recommended time.

TIP**. After gluing up the pieces, use duck tape to tape the back side to all the pieces to fold the pieces together. Then place the string or wire around to clamp together

Use a string (strong twine) for clamping . Loosely fit the string around the glued up piece. Tie ends together with a double knot. Take a nail and twist it once to begin to tighten the string. You can do this on all flat sides. Once it is tight hammer the nail into the bench or a spare piece of wood to hold it in place

Pre-drill the holes in the corners , using a bit that will allow the screw to pass trough smoothly. Using 3" deck screws, screw into the wall into studs. The screw in the end needs to be small enough so it will not go through the top shelve. Use a measuring tape or a level to pencil in the shelving height and mount. Add shelving and fasten with screw in the front and in the back to hold shelve down.
