Simple Wooden Periscope Toy
This is a simple project for children to understand the rule and application of reflection.
Supplies
- Fusion 360 Perfect software to help me modeling this periscope.
- White glue Use to stick the laser cut part.
- 3mm Wood board The main construction material.
- Mirror sticker For reflective light sources.
- 3mm PMMA board For Mirror sticker.
It's a very simple project all you need to do is cut the wood out with a laser machine, put it together with your hands.
Reflection of Light
The most basic rule of reflection.
- The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal all lie in the same plane
- The angle of incidence = Angle of reflection
When we understand basic rule of reflection we can start making periscope.
Two mirrors are needed in order for the light to turn around the obstacles. Just follow the two basic rules and install the mirror to allow the image to reflect into your eyes. You can look at the second photo to understand the path of the light.
Start Making Periscope
This periscope contains 7 parts that require laser cutting and all the dxf files you need to cut are down there.(File Numbers 1 and 7 need to be cut twice.)
And you can start assembling these laser cutting part , which are like puzzles without a standard order.(Please remember to put the part of the mirror in and cover the side part)
Some tips for applying white glue.
- Clean the cutted surface before you apply white glue.(You can use box cutter or sandpaper to clean the surface that you want to apply white glue.)
- When you finish assemble two part together you can fill some glue in gap and scrape it flat with some unwanted wood chips.
- Using of some paper tape can effectively prevent the two wood chips from separating during the sticking process.
About choosing the surface for the mirror sticker, you can choose pmma material rather than wood material because the pmma surface is smoother than wood surface.
The Final Result
Now you can use this tool to see objects that are blocked.
Thank you.
