Simple Wings (and Flying Instructions)

I've always wanted to be able to fly so maybe making these for my kids was me living vicariously through them. The best part was surprising them in the middle of an adventure story. If you are wanting to make some ordinary magic happen then this is a pretty inexpensive and easy (if you have good pliers) project.

Good ol' wire hangers. It was surprisingly difficult to find wire hangers in my own closet. When did I transition to all plastic? It's probably because I am always making things from the wire ones. I actually had to go out and buy some but they were pretty inexpensive.

You can take a look at the picture I included to get an idea of the shape I made for fairy wings and dragon wings.

One thing to keep in mind when you do this step is that you will want to leave about two to three inches of extra wire sticking out where you have twisted the ends together. This will come in handy when you combine the two wings in step 3.

Once you get the wings bent together, put the tights on over them and then readjust the wires. Keep working with the wings to make the shapes mirror images.

Use the extra wire sticking out from step 1 and combine the two wings. This was honestly the most challenging part for me but I kept twisting them together and before long the two were fused.

Use your creativity to bring the wings to life. If you are doing this with your kids you could let them go wild with colors.

Use your scissors to cut two arm holes in the excess at the waistline of the tights and test them out on your kid. The waistline of tights usually have some reinforcement (or so my wife tells me) so that the holes will not continue to rip too much. Ours took some adjusting but before long those kids will be running away with their wings.

The best part of making these is getting creative with your imagination. My 2-year-old began flapping around without any coaching and you can see how her "flying" soon turned into a workout for me.
