Don't you like coming home to a nice, scented, candle lit room? Well, you can have that amazing feeling everyday with a quick, easy, microwave candle. Make your own personalized candle right in the comfort of your home. We're going to take you through the instructions for this easy candle adapted from doityourself.com. Let's get started!
Prior to starting this project we would like to inform of you of the safety hazards that could occur. Please take precaution, as you will be handling hot objects such as wax. Thank you!

Tools Needed:

  • Microwave (we used a 1,000 watt kitchen microwave)
    • Tip: Using a lower watt microwave may result in longer melting time
  • Microwave safe bowl
  • Pot holder or hand towel
  • Midsize Jar (we used a 16 oz jar)
  • Spoon to stir
  • Lighter

Ingredients:

  • 16 oz Soy wax flakes
  • 1 oz Scented oil
  • Food coloring

  • While your wax is in the microwave, apply super glue to the bottom of the metal tab on your wick
  • Place wick inside jar and press the bottom of the metal tab into the middle of the bottom of the jar.
    • Tip:If your hand does not fit, it may be easier to use your spoon to press the tab down
  • Hold tab to the bottom of the jar for about 20 seconds until the glue dries

Keep Warming Wax Until Melted

  • Using your pot holder or hand towel, carefully take your bowl out of the microwave
  • CAUTION: bowl will be HOT! Use a hand towel or pot holder to remove.
  • Stir wax with your spoon
    • Tip: There should be solid white wax pieces with clear melted wax around the pieces
  • Using your pot holder or hand towel, carefully put bowl back in the microwave
  • CAUTION: bowl will be HOT! Use hand towel or pot holder to remove.
  • Continue to microwave your wax in 2 minute intervals, taking it out to stir in between until wax is completely melted
    • Tip: When wax is completely melted, it should appear clear

Add Scent

IMG_8815.JPG
  • Once your wax is completely melted you can add your scent
    • Tip: Most scented oils come in 1 oz bottles, If yours did, take the rubber stopper off to allow for easier pouring
  • Pour the scented oil in to the melted wax.
    • Tip: Because the oil is cooler than the wax, it may harden some of the wax it comes into contact with
  • Stir thoroughly

Add Color

IMG_8817.JPG
  • Add your food coloring
  • The more you add, the more colorful your candle will be
    • Tip: Keep in mind that as the wax cools it turns white and the color will not be as visible as when the wax is melted
  • Just as with the oil, the coloring may harden some of the wax it comes into contact with
  • Stir thoroughly

Mix in Scent and Color

  • After stirring both the scented oil and coloring in the melted wax, the wax might have unmelted pieces

  • Microwave in 30 second intervals until wax is melted.
  • CAUTION: bowl will be HOT! Use a hand towel or pot holder
  • Take the bowl out of the microwave using your pot holder or hand towel
  • CAUTION: bowl will be HOT! Use a hand towel or pot holder to remove
  • Stir melted mixture thoroughly

Pour the Candle

    • Tip: Don't pull the wick! It might come off
  • Holding your bowl with the hand towel, carefully pour melted mixture of wax, oil scent, and food coloring into the prepared jar
  • CAUTION: bowl will be HOT! Use a hand towel or pot holder to remove
  • Once wax is poured in your jar, center the wick by gently pulling straight. Hold for 30 seconds to ensure the wax will cool with the wick centered
