Simple Sausage Gravy and Biscuits

Intro

Sausage gravy is a very simple and delicious meal the whole family would love. Most people have some sort of fond memory of a Sunday morning started with warm biscuits smothered in gravy. Whether its home made, out of a can or from McDonalds sausage gravy is the same thing (plus or minus a few ingredients). This is a simple recipe that is based in a rue and once mastered, the concepts can be used in many other recipes.

Ingredients and Materials

Gravy:

  • 2 cups whole milk (2% can be substituted but will reduce more)
  • 2 tbsp of all purpose flour
  • 1 lb pork sausage
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tsp salt
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper

Biscuits:

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 5 tbsp cold butter
  • 1 cup whole milk

Materials:

  • Whisk
  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Large saucepan with lid
  • Large baking sheet
  • Tablespoon

Biscuits +Picture+

Step 1:

  • preheat oven to 425F
  • Sift baking powder, salt, sugar, and flour together in mixing bowl
  • Cut in the butter until it blends into crumbs (use a fork or mixer to do this)
  • Add milk and mix until a ball of sticky dough forms (don't over mix!!)

Step 2

  • Grease the baking sheet with butter or olive oil
  • Use the tablespoon to portion out 12 evenly sized lumps of dough
  • * Brush the tops with melted butter
  • Bake for 12 minutes or until biscuits are a golden brown

Step 3:

  • Immediately after removing from the oven, rub the top of each biscuit with a stick of butter
  • Add a light sprinkling of salt to each (to taste)

Gravy

Step 1:

  • Brown the ground beef over medium-high heat
  • Add butter to pan and melt
  • Gradually mix in the flour, making sure it absorbs the greases and oil evenly
  • Allow the flour to brown, 1-2 minutes

Step 2:

  • Add the milk while stirring with the whisk
  • Reduce the heat to medium
  • Add black pepper and salt
  • Allow to simmer until the gravy sticks to your spoon but still runs off in rapid drips + Picture

Step 3:

  • Remove from heat
  • Allow to cool and thicken
  • * If the desired consistency is not reached, xanthan gum can be used in small amounts to thicken.

Serving

For serving take two biscuits and break them in half down the middle. Liberally smother with warm gravy. Salt and pepper to taste.
