Simple Reversible Purse

Need a new project to use up some fabric from your stash? Give this a try. This simple, easy reversible purse is an excellent project for the beginner or experienced sewer. Make a fashion statement for yourself or create a lovely gift.
This project is based on directions available on the Martha Stewart website.
Supplies

Gather the necessary supplies.
- 1/2 yd. each of (2) complimentary or contrasting fabrics
- coordinating thread
- marking pencil or crayon
- pins
- scissors (preferably fabric)
- needle for hand-sewing
- sewing machine & iron
- Prewash both fabrics to limit shrinking after the purse is made.
- Iron both fabrics before marking and cutting.
Pattern Template

Enlarging the Template

Use a printer or copier to enlarge the template.
Increased the size by 200%.
Assemble your printed pieces into a single template.
The Larger Template

Cut out the new larger template.
Marking the Pattern Pieces

With right sides together, fold both pieces of fabric matching the selvage edges.
Trace template onto both fabrics.
Cutting the Fabric Pieces

Cut out the traced pattern creating (2) pieces from both fabrics.
Pin the Pieces

Align and pin one set of pieces together with right sides facing.
Repeat with the second set of pieces.
Sewing the Pieces

All seam allowances are 1/4".
Sew across the top of each handle.
Sew along the bottom curve of each piece.
Leave both sides of each handle open.
Clipping the Curves

Clip the bottom curved edge so the fabric lays smooth when finished.
Use pinking shears to trim along the seam if you prefer.
Assembling the Purse

Turn one of the pieces right-side out.
Insert that piece into the inside-out piece.
Be sure to line up seams, raw edges, and handles.
Sewing the Neckline

All seam allowances are 1/4".
Pin the edges of the "neckline" of the bag.
Sew the pieces together.
Clip along the curve or use pinking shears to trim along the seam.
Turning the Purse

Using the longer handle opening, turn the entire bag right-side out.
Press all seams so they lay flat.
Finishing the Handles

Fold raw edges of "armholes" in 1/4" and press.
Baste the openings together.
Topstitch 1/8" around bag handles to finish. Make sure you catch both sides.
Topstitch 1/8" around neckline to finish.
Press the entire purse with the iron when finished.
