Simple Mobile Phone Stand

I saw online instructions for making a "simple" mobile phone holder, but thought it looked way over engineered and complicated.

It also had 6 or 7 separate pieces.
So I decided to design and make my own, that only uses 2 pieces of wood

This could be the perfect simple piece to make with your kids to give to a grandparent, teacher or friend and provide a bit of "over tool" bonding with your kids

This holder allows your phone to prop up while you are using it for jobs like cooking etc, it also allows the charging cable to be used whilst you are using the phone.

It was made from a piece of scrap Jarrah flooring 18mm thick, I have a load of these small pieces which were offcuts from a neighbours flooring that he gave me.

Supplies

Piece of wood (mine is Jarrah, a hardwood like teak)

Panel pins or Brad nails

Wood glue

Tools used (because I have them, hand tools can be used)

Tablesaw

Bandsaw

Hammer

Sander

The Wood

I started with a small piece of 18mm Jarrah tongue and groove.
It was approx 140mm square (6 inches in American freedom units or the width of a bald eagles tail)
Using the table saw I cut off the tongue and groove from each side and then cut it in half.
This gave me 2 pieces approx 130mm long x 65mm wide (5 x 2. 5 inches)

Cutting the Phone Slot

I set my tablesaw at approx 22 degrees and cut one piece of the wood across its short side the 2 sloped sides were then sanded.

Cutting the Charger Cord Slot

In the second piece I drilled a 13mm hole with a spade bit at the position where the phone slot would be, this size hole is correct for an android device, for an iPhone you will need to use a 20mm bit.
I then marked the 2 sides of the slot.

Cutting the Charger Cord Slot Continued

Once marked out I cut the cord slot with the bandsaw and sanded inside the slot

Glueing Up and Nailing

I attached the 2 angle cut pieces to the cord slot piece using wood glue and 25mm panel pins, leaving a slot between large enough to accommodate your phone (in this case approx 8mm (1/3 inch)
I forgot to take a picture of it so have attached a later one to show the position

Sanding

Using my table sander I sanded all the sides and bevelled over all the corners

Test Fit of Charging Cable

To make sure it fit I threaded the charging cable through the hole into the bottom of the phone slot, it was quite a snug fit but could be adjusted if I wished, but I'm happy with it

Feet

I thought it would be useful to have three feet so that it would sit steady on an uneven surface.
I had these little plastic bits, spare from some "unbranded knock off" meccano.
So drilled 3 holes (7mm) and push fitted them in

Finishing

I gave this a coat of Olive Oil as it brought the colour of the wood out nicely.
Once it had soaked in I inserted the phone which connected onto the charger cable.
The whole thing sits flat as the cable sits in the slot and the cable take about 2 seconds to disengage from the holder if wanted.
